Wheeling Park, Martins Ferry dominate 25th Colt Carnival
BYESVILLE — Wheeling Park and Martins Ferry turned in outstanding performances Saturday morning during the 25th running of the Colt Carnival on the campus of Meadowbrook High School.
The Patriots, with five runners in the top 13, captured the boys’ race with 32 points, while the Purple Riders were second with 79.
On the girls’ side, the Purple Riders captured top honors with 58 markers, which was 27 ahead of the second-place Patriots.
Wheeling Park’s Ronnie Saunders continued his fine senior season as he broke the tape in 16-minutes, 41.9-seconds. That clocking was nearly a full minute ahead of Martins Ferry’s Justin Geery (17:41.3). St. Clairsville’s Zac Orzolek (17:44.1) finished third.
Rounding out the top five were Wheeling Park’s Quintin Thomas (17:50.4) and Cambridge’s JayTyler McConkey (18:06.2).
Other Patriots placing included Vincent DiProsperis (6th, 18:12.9); Isaak Murphy (8th, 18:15.6) and C.J. Powell (13th, 18:24.9).
Bellaire’s Isaiah Wilhelm (9th, 18:18.5) and Martins Ferry’s Elijah Smith (10th, 18:21.1) recorded top 10 finishes.
The Big Reds’ Jacob Defibaugh (15th, 18:30) and the Purple Riders’ Michael Lyle (19th, 18:44.5) turned in top 20 efforts.
Also placing for Martins Ferry were Trent Lewis (21st, 18:59.5) and Charlie Anderson (27th, 19:25.4).
Barnesville’s Tyler Jenkins (25th, 19:15.1) was the Shamrocks first runner across the finish line, while St. Clairsville’s Hunter Tomich (26th, 19:15.7). Buckeye Local’s Brody Cermak (31st, 19:42.5) paced the Panthers.
Locally, St. Clairsville placed third in the team standings with 132 points. Bellaire (208) was seventh, Barnesville (311) 11th, Buckeye Local (320) 12th and Indian Creek (335) 15th.
ON THE girls’ side, Buckeye Trail freshman Kathryn Williams ran away from the field as she covered the distance in 20:28.2.
Martins Ferry had three runners finish in the top six to fuel its championship. Natalie Forsyth (2nd, 21:26.4), Olivia Walton (4th, 22:19.5) and Chloe Hill (6th, 22:29.3) led the way, with Hannah Hupp (11th, 22:59.4) and Hope Lewis (35th, 25:48.7) also scoring.
The Patriots were led by Kerrigan Walker (10th, 22:58.5). Melina McCabe (14th, 23:28.4), Maddie Gilson (23:46.2), McKenna Dunbar (23:46.9) and Eliza Aulick (26th, 25:02.4) also scored.
St. Clairsville had a pair of runners in the top 10 in Allyson Evonek (5th, 22:23.0) and Maggie Marody (8th, 22:48).
Bellaire’s Katrina Davis (9th, 22:51.3) was the Big Reds top finisher. Sydney Purtiman (16th, 23:41.7) also placed high.
Locally, the Red Devils (161) finished fifth. Bellaire (176) was seventh, Barnesville (235) 10th and Bridgeport (389) 15th.
