SHADYSIDE — A pair of young high school wrestling teams squared off in dual meet action Thursday afternoon inside the Tigers Den.

With only seven of the 14 weight classes having an entrant on either side, the Bulldogs had a few more talented ‘pups’ than the Tigers had ‘cubs’ in a lop-sided, 54-12, triumph.

Bridgeport won five of the seven bouts — all coming by lightning-quick first period pins.

“I thought we wrestled well. My 145 and my 152 got a couple of nice wins for us,” Bridgeport head coach David Nelson said of Cody Swauger and Skyler Hatten. “It’s Cody’s first year, so he got his first win. Skyler hasn’t wrestled in a couple of weeks, but he came out strong and looked good.”

Swauger won his match in 1-minute, 8-seconds, while Hatten needed just 53 ticks.

Bridgeport took an 18-0 lead on forfeit wins by Sean White (106), John Flanagan (113) and Christian Waterman (120).

In addition to Swauger and Hatten, also picking up pins were 220-pounder Devin Danhart (52 seconds) and 285-pounder Zac Kuneff (1:02).

Senior standouts Mason Kuneff (160) and Tino Kusic (195) received forfeits to improve to 17-0 and 16-0, respectively.

The Tigers’ two victories were by forfeit to Brent Schrader (132) and Jakob Klug (182).

Double forfeits were charted at 126, 138 and 170.

“All I can say is that we are getting better,” first-year Shadyside head coach Chase Kinemond assessed. “At the beginning of the year it was a little rough, but the kids are definitely getting better day-by-day.”
