OFF THE TEE: Play it Again Sports event highlights busy week at WPGC

The Wheeling Park Golf Club had another busy week of events as its season rolled along.

One of the bigger events of the calendar was the Presidents Cup Play it Again Sports 36 Hole Best Ball Championship.

Capturing the title of that event was the team of Jay Davis and Mike Wetzel. They fired a round of 119. Finishing 10 shots back were Roger Kupfer and Art Lightner. Nick Klamut and Ron Heatherly were third with a 136, while Chris Bommer and Gary Mercer were fourth with a 141. Rounding out the top five were Joe Wurtzbacher and Steve Usenick with a 141.

The handicap scoring crown went to Jim Ennis and Bob Green who tallied a 119. Tom Mitchell and Don Dewitt posted a 121 to finish second. Joe Haught and Phil Demailo were third with a 123.

The Paree Insurance event was also held, playing in a 9-hole, stroke play event. Rich Humphrey won the crown with a 34. He was three shots better than Doug Miller and four shots better than Kupfer, Mark Maguire and Robbie Evans. The handicap scoring crown went to Bill Piccard with a 30. Also posting a 30 were Bommer, while Haught finished with a 31.

The third event of the week was an 18-hole stroke play event with Kupfer prevailing with a round of 71. Tony Coppa was second with a 75, while Klamut finished third with a 75 and Wurtzbacher was fourth with a 76. In the handicap scoring, Bommer won with a 64. Usenick was second with a 65.

ELKS JUNIOR TOURNAMENTS

The Wheeling Elks Lodge #28 is sponsoring a pair of junior golf tournaments. A par 3 tourney will be held at Oglebay Park on Wednesday, June 26 for ages 7-9 years old. Registration will run from 10:30 a.m. until the shotgun start at 11 a.m. The top three placers will receive an award. Refreshments will be provided after the round at the Haller Shelter.

An 18-hole event will be held at Crispin Course for players 10-18 on the same day. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m. Registration will begin at 7 a.m. The 10-12 year olds will play from the gold tees, the 13-15 year olds will play from the white and 16-18 from the blue (for boys). For the girls, the 10-12 will play the gold tees, the 13-15 will play the reds and the 16-18 will play the reds. The top three players will receive awards and refreshments will be provided after the round at the Haller Shelter.

SALT FORK

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The Salt Fork Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, June 11 at Salt Fork State Park Golf Course near Cambridge, Ohio. Age divisions will be boys 13-14, 15-16, and 17-18 and girls 13-15 and 16-18. Entry fee is $35 ($20 if you have a Salt Fork membership).

BELMONT HILLS

JUNIOR TOURNAMENT

The annual event will be held on Monday, July 22 at Belmont Hills and feature three age groups (17-18, 14-16 and 12-13) for boys and two age groups (15-18 and 12-14) for girls. Awards will be presented to the top three finishers in all boys and girls divisions. The entry fee is $30 and checks can be made payable to Barnesville Golf Parents. Lunch will be provided to all competitors and is available for purchase to spectators.

The event will begin at 9 a.m. with a shotgun start and the deadline for entry is Monday, July 15.

UPCOMING SCRAMBLES

THE 20TH annual Sons of Italy Bellaire Lodge #754 will hold its annual golf scramble on Monday, June 3 at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. The entry fee is $200 for a four-man team. The cost includes golf, cart, refreshments on the course, dinner at the Haller Shelter. The top three teams will receive prizes. The event is limited to the first 36 teams to register. For more information, please contact Phil Pata at 695-0691.

THE 21ST annual Niekro Classic will be held on Friday, June 21 at Belmont Hills Country Club.

There will once again be an open division and an all-Bridgeport division. The defending champions in the Bridgeport division are Jeff Herink (’86), Matt Herink (’17), Kevin Herink (’19) and Jonathan Kreiter (’14). The open division champions in 2018 were Donnie Cash, Gary Young, Todd Schambach and Anthony Reasbeck.

The entry fee is $100 per player and the proceeds benefit Bridgeport High School. The event with begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 a.m.

THE BELLAIRE Touchdown Club is sponsoring its 13th Annual Golf Scramble on June 29 at the Fairway River Links. The entry fee is $60 per per person or $240 per team. The cost includes cart, lunch, beverages and a dinner after the scramble. Entry forms can be picked up at Denny’s Blue Angel, Gulla’s Lunch, Around The World Gourmet Marketplace (formerly Frizzi’s Market) and the Quick Stop in Neffs. THE ANNUAL Tom Donahue Memorial Classic Golf Scramble will be held at BecWood Hills on Saturday, July 27. The entry fee is $60 per player or $240 per team. THE BARNESVILLE Hospital Scramble will be played on Aug. 2 at Belmont Hills Country Club. A shotgun start will be held at 10 a.m. and awards and dinner are slated for 3 p.m. The 17th annual event is the largest fundraiser of the year for the hospital auxiliary.

The cost to enter is $120 per player and it includes golf, lunch, dinner, prizes and refreshments on the course. There are also four levels of sponsorships available.
