PREP ROUNDUP: Area harriers fare well at Claymont

URICHSVILLE — Bellaire’s Jacob Defibaugh registered a second-place finish and Martins Ferry’s boys were third Saturday morning in the Small School Division event at the Claymont Early Bird Cross Country Invitational at Claymont High School.

Defibaugh, a junior, crossed the finish line with a time of 16:59.2, about 32 seconds behind winner Demetri Snellenberger of team champion East Canton.

The Purple Riders had three runners finish in the top 20 en route to a second-place team finish, paced by junior Elijah Smith (17:46.6), who was 10th. Francis Toohey was 17th (18:09.9) and Wyatt Wodarcyk was 19th (18:15.6).

Harrison Central senior Eric Leech was third overall in 17:10.7, while teammate Logan laney was 15th (17:59.7).

Martins Ferry’s girls took third, paced by senior Chloe Hill (14th, 22:34.9). Teammate Hannah Hupp came in one spot back (22:39.2).

Harrison Central’s Jasmine Arnold was fourth (20:30.3), while Bellaire’s Katrina Davis was ninth (21:43.1). The Linsly trio of Haley Heitz (21:58.7), Maddie Campsey (22:01.2) and Molly Heron (22:26.3) were 11-13, respectively.

St. Clairsville’s Maggie Marody was 16th in her Big School Division race in 22:39.4, while the Red Devils’ Hunter Tomich was 19th (18:20.6) in his.

MARIETTA — Union Local’s Shawn Coe recorded a 21st place finish in 18:58.5 on the course at the Broughton Nature Area.

Madi Sells paced the Jets girls by taking 23rd in 23:36.

Shadyside Stays Unbeaten

SHADYSIDE — Madison Davis had 29 assists and Caroline Mercer collected 25 digs and five aces as Shadyside moved to 3-0 with a 25-20, 25-16, 25-15 victory against River inside the Tiger Den.

Sarah Teasdale added eight kills and eight digs for the LTs, while Riley Brown and Tory Hendershot both registered seven kills.
