BEALLSVILLE — Frontier’s big-play Cougars spoiled the celebration Friday night for newly-named Dave Caldwell Field at Beallsville High in the Blue Devils’ home opener

Sophomore quarterback J.D. Schmidt threw three TD passes and Noah Barnhart ran for three touchdowns as the 2-0 visitors cruised to a 47-13 win, while a gritty Big Blue slipped to 0-2.

“We knew (Frontier) would run the spread on us,” said first-year head coach Rusty Lucas. “They have a quick-strike offense, but we have to be more physical.”

The tone was set early as the Cougars scored on their first two drives, while the hosts turned it over both times.

“We’re on the cusp of turning the corner and being a really competitive team,” added Lucas, “and our kids didn’t show any quit on the field.”

Barnhart had runs of 23 and 14 on the opening series before an 11-yard run to paydirt capped a 65-yard march. The PAT at 8:57 made it 7-0.

A Jansen Stewart fumble cover at the hosts’ 31 on the Devils’ third play set up a third-and-10 TD connection to Kalyb McQueary, who got behind a defender near the goal line and tip-toed in for the score at 7:27 to make it 13-0.

Tanner Bills had a pass pick for the Cougs, but Dakota Phillips came back with one for Beallsville at his 27.

McQueary’s pick set up a third Frontier score as the Washington Countians made it 20-0 two plays later. Bills ran for 49 and Barnhart rumbled the final 20 with 10:26 left in the half.

Beallsville found the end zone on the ensuing drive after a nice return by senior James Schnegg to the Cougs’ 34. Phillips rolled out and found sophomore Brandon Louden in the back of the endzone to cover 25 yards. Phillips’ PAT kick made it 20-7 at 8:59.

Frontier’s eight-play ensuing drive saw Barnhart hit paydirt from three yards out for a 27-7 margin with 4:33 showing.

An inspired second half opening drive resulted in a TD after Wyatt Brown’s 23-yard return. Brown, inserted at QB, threw 29 yards to Phillips to highlight the series.

A Phlllips-to-Brown pass for the TD at 7:56 sliced it to 27-13.

Schmidt, elusive in the pocket, threw to Logan Brookover and added a point-after on the ensuing series to push the margin to 34-13.

Breckin Hoff pulled in a 19-yard aerial from Schmidt for a sixth Cougar TD with 1:39 left in the third, while frosh QB Lucas Cox tossed a 35-yard bomb to Owen Panozzo in the fourth to cap the scoring.

Beallsville junior Wyatt Moore had a sterling all-around effort on both sides of the ball and special teams, while seniors Spencer Jarrett, Steve Yingling, and sophomore Bradley Moats had some big hits on the defensive side.

“We’re going to do everything as a coaching staff to get improvements in all areas,” Lucas mentioned. The Devils host Hundred on Friday, while Frontier welcomes Bridgeport.

Also honored at halftime was Beallsville’s 1994 state semifinal team. Caldwell posted 197 wins in 29 seasons at his alma mater with eight playoff teams, six OVAC and three PVC titles.
