St. Clairsville to induct 15th athletic HoF class

The 15th class of the St. Clairsville Athletic Hall of Fame will take its rightful place in history tonight.

The three-member class, which consists of Jim Baugh, Kim Clifford and Michael Eaton, will formally be inducted at halftime of the Red Devils’ football game against Indian Creek.

Here’s a capsule look at the honorees:

JIM BAUGH (Class of 1979) — This former Red Devil athlete was a standout in football, basketball and baseball, but it was on the diamond where he left his biggest impact.

A multiple-year letterman in baseball, Baugh became the Red Devils’ regular third baseman as a sophomore and didn’t look back. He shifted to shortstop as a junior and hit .349 to lead the club.

It was until last spring that Baugh held the St. Clairsville school record for stolen bases.

In football, Baugh was a starter in the secondary on the 1978 undefeated St. C. football team.

On the hardwood, Baugh earned two letters. He was the Red Devils’ leading scorer his senior season at 12.6 points per game. That followed up a 7.8 points per game average as a junior.

After his senior season, in each of the three sports he played, Baugh was name to the All-Valley team.

Baugh has remained highly visible and active in St. Clairsville athletics. He’s coached baseball and he’s in his 40th year as an active member in the Saints Club.

Jim and his wife, Amy, have two children — Chris and Alison — and five grandchildren.

KIM CLIFFORD (Head Basketball Coach, 1991-2018) — Clifford retired from the Red Devils’ post after he amassed 371 career victories in his 27 seasons at the helm. All told, Clifford owned a 461-282 career record.

No fewer than 20 of his 27 seasons with the Red Devils resulted in a winning record.

During his tenure, Clifford guided St. Clairsville basketball to unmatched heights. His 2012 team won the regional championship and advance to the Division II state basketball tournament for the only time in school history.

The Red Devils came back the following winter and repeated as district champions before bowing out in the regional tournament.

St. Clairsville claimed its only two OVAC boys basketball titles in school history under Clifford’s watch, capturing the Class 4A titles in 2012 and 2013.

All told, Clifford guided the Devils to six Buckeye 8 and eight sectional championships.

Clifford was named the 2008 Ohio High School Coaches Association Coach of the Year and was a finalist for the OVAC Coach of the Year award in 2012 and 2013. He received the prestigious Bob Arnzen Award.

Prior to coming to St. Clairsville, Clifford spent five years at Cadiz High School, accumulating a 90-48 record. He guided the Cardinals to an OVAC title. He also spent a few years cutting his coaching teeth at his alma mater, Bellaire. He served as a freshman coach and then worked on the varsity staff.

Kim and his wife, Penny, have three sons — Ryan, who is the current Red Devils’ basketball coach; Justin, who is the head coach at Harrison Central, and Kurt, who has worked on the St. C. junior high staff for several seasons. The couple also has six grandchildren and a seventh is on the way.

MICHAEL EATON (Class of 2014) — This multi-sport athlete made his biggest athletic splash in swimming.

Eaton qualified to the OHSAA State Swimming and Diving Championship meet four times after winning multiple sectional and district championships.

Eaton finished as the OVAC’s most decorated Ohio prep swimmer, accumulating five all-Ohio finishes, including state runnerup in 2014 in the 100 breaststroke. As a senior, he scored 29 points in the state meet.

He was named OVAC Male Swimmer of the Year three times and still holds conference and school records in numerous events. His 56.62 that he swam in the state final is still the all-time OVAC record.

Eaton was also named a high school all-American by the National Interscholastic Swimming Coaches Association.

After his state runner-up finish, Eaton continued his swimming career at Ohio State University. He spent four years with the Buckeyes, posting the sixth-best time in OSU history in the 100 breaststroke at 53.52. He reached the ‘B Final’ of the 100 breaststroke during the 2017 season.

While in Columbus, Eaton received the prestigious ‘Coach John Bruce Commitment to Excellence’ Award.

Eaton, also a standout in long-course swimming, qualified to the 2016 Olympic Trials in Omaha. Eaton competed in the 100 breaststroke. Eaton qualified for that opportunity after posting a 63.57 in his specialty.

Displaying his ability to lead from the moment he stepped foot on campus, Eaton was named freshman class captain and was chosen to take part in the Wolstein Leadership Academy.

Along with his accolades in the water, Eaton also shined in the pole vault for the Red Devils. He qualified twice to the OHSAA State Track and Field Championship. He was the overall OVAC runnerup in his speciality in 2013 and 2014. His height of 14-9 in 2014 is still the school record.

On top of his track career, Eaton also played golf during his years with the Red Devils.

Eaton completed his degree in logistics management through the OSU Fisher College of Business in December of 2018.
