Harrison Co. Sports HOF to induct new class

CADIZ — The Harrison County High School Sports Hall of Fame Committee has released the names of the Hall of Fame Class of 2019. Three former Harrison County sports greats, a dedicated volunteer, and four of Harrison County’s most successful teams will be honored prior to and at halftime of Friday night’s Harrison Central-Oak Glen football game. The Hall of Fame, sponsored by the Harrison News Herald and Custer Pharmacy, is located in the conference room of the Puskarich Public Library. A pre-game social with light food and refreshments will be held in honor of the inductees in the high school gymnasium beginning at 6 p.m. and inductions will be held on the football field at halftime. Admission to the social is free of charge.

Tim McMillen, Tiffany “Stocker” Sibel, Terry Thompson, Mike Madzia, the 1952 and 1953 Jewett football and 1952-53 and 1953-54 basketball teams make up this year’s class.

Tim McMillen — A 1981 graduate of Lakeland High School, McMillen is considered one of the finest pure shooters and tenacious defenders to play for the Raiders basketball program. McMillen will remain as the seventh highest scorer in Lakeland history with 1,058 points and was selected by coaches and players as one of the top 15 players to wear a Raider uniform. McMillen was selected All-Eastern District twice, All-IVC, and named all-state his senior season. He was also a standout baseball player who once struck out 13 straight batters and was named All-IVC twice.

Tiffany “Stocker” Sibel — A 1998 Conotton Valley High School graduate, Sibel is considered one of the of the greatest athletes in the history of the area. Sibel earned 16 letters for the Rockets during her career and was named All-District in volleyball, all-state in basketball and all-state twice in softball. Sibel went on to play college softball at Cleveland State and was the first player in program history to be selected All-League four consecutive years. She set Cleveland State and Horizon League records and was inducted into the Cleveland State Hall of Fame in 2013. Sibel became a member of the Conotton Valley Hall of Fame earlier this year.

Terry Thompson — A 1954 Jewett High School graduate, Thompson is one of the finest two sport athletes Jewett and Harrison County has seen. Thompson scored over 1000 points in his basketball career and was named All-Eastern Ohio after both his junior and senior seasons and All-Ohio his senior campaign. In 6-Man football, Thompson was a hard blacking center and pass catcher on offense, and he was tenacious from the defensive end position. Terry was also named All-Eastern Ohio for his efforts in football.

Mike Madzia — Madzia coached summer baseball for eight years and has been a 44 year and counting member of the Cadiz and Harrison Central Booster Clubs. He’s been a regular ticket or program seller for home athletic events and ran Booster Bingo 51 weeks a year for 20 straight years, which brought in close to $200,000 that funded numerous projects that continue to benefit Harrison Central athletes today.

Jewett 1952 & 1953 Football and 1952-’53 & 1953-’54 Basketball Teams — Between the start of the 1952 football season and the end of the 1954 basketball season, Jewett Wildcats sports were one of tge best teams in the area. They won 40 games in basketball and were unbeaten in their 17 football games. In those two years, Jewett brought home two Northern Division 6-Man Titles, two Eastern Ohio football Championships, two Harrison County Tournament Basketball Championships, a Harrison County Basketball League Title, and two Sectional Championships.

At the helm of the four teams were head coaches Stanley Straight and Leonard Mosser while Earl Tullis was the assistant coach. Tom Colburn, Jerry Grimm, McKinney Thompson, Jim Wilson, Carl Snyder, Charles Snyder, Jim Wilson were the managers while Jack Maffitt was the mascot.

The players include: Jim Adrian, Jim Bates, Jim Birney, Eddie Bolitho, Richard Brindley, Richard Busby, Van Carson, Bill Cerett, Clyde Cerett, John Coutts, George Cutshall, Jim Dinger, Ronnie Donley, Larry Eckley, Bryant Guy, Bob Hamilton, Richard Harris, Gary Hauber, Tom Horn, Eugene Mills, Leonard Morris, Eddie O’Toole, Robert Petkovich, Gary Schuman, Kenny Schuman, Tom Schuman, Don Smith, Gene Smith, Richard Stahl, Bob Stewart, Carl Strausbaugh, Gary Telfer, Larry Telfer, Terry Thompson, Larry Townsend and Bill Welsh.
