ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Winning never gets old for Harrison Central bowling coach Bobbie Parkinson.

For her, she cherishes each time the Huskies bring home another title, which has become commonplace for her program the last few seasons.

Harrison Central added a pair of trophies to the new school’s burgeoning trophy case Monday afternoon by sweeping the boys’ and girls’ crowns in impressive fashion at the Buckeye 8 Championships inside St. Clair Lanes.

Logan Cologie and Aleyna Runevitch both cruised to individual victories for Harrison Central, which used the event as a springboard to what it hopes will be a successful late-season run.

“It’s a very good day to be a Huskie,” Parkinson beamed.

“Both groups of kids had bucket lists made up and the Buckeye 8 was on both their lists. We got done what we wanted to do.”

Cologie fired a 255 in his third game to pull away from St, Clairsville’s Joey Patrizi and win the individual title with a three-game score of 723. He also rolled games of 224 and 244.

Patrizi finished with 673, while Harrison Central’s Zack Keyser and East Liverpool’s Alfred Todd were third and fourth with scores of 667 and 653, respectively.

Union Local’s Jordan Duke (629) and the Potters’ Paxton Grimes (602) also earned All-Buckeye 8 honors.

“Logan flat-out bowled very well,” Parkinson said. “He picked up a couple of the boys that were bowling below their average.

“He’s been in a slump himself the last couple of matches, but he came to bowl (Monday), and that’s what he did.”

The Huskies’ Jacob Hudson (seventh, 598), Trevor Thompson (eighth, 597) and Hunter Stark (10th, 553) also boasted top 10 finishes as the team finished with a score of 3,888, well ahead of East Liverpool’s 3,634.

Union Local was third with 3,387, followed by Beaver Local (3,124), St. Clairsville (3,021), Martins Ferry (2,684) and Buckeye Local (2,488).

Like last season’s state tournament run, Parkinson said her boys’ have been putting together a full team effort this winter.

“That’s why you have up to eight on a roster so you can count on the ones having a good day to pick up the ones that are down,” she said.

And Parkinson added her boys are well-aware of the task awaits them in the coming weeks.

“They want to get back that mojo they had back last year,” she said. “They’ve realized they have to step it up if they want to return to the big dance.”

Harrison Central’s girls hope they can reach state this season. If they do, it might be on the back of Runevitch, who finished with a 648.

The sophomore started with a 244, then concluded with games of 192 and 212.

“She’s a very strong bowler,” Parkinson noted. “She spends a lot of time at practice. She actually is bowling with a bad ankle. We’re very fortunate because she didn’t get to bowl twice last week.”

Runevitch led a group of four Huskies atop the leaderboard. Cami Basich was second with a 511, followed by her sister, Marly, who recorded a 505. Tory Thompson was fourth with a 500.

Union Local’s Cherika Koplets also earned All-Buckeye 8 honors with a 497, as did East Liverpool’s Allison Danver (471).

The Jets were second as a team, registering a score of 2,752. The Potters were third (2,565), followed by Buckeye Local (2,500), St. Clairsville (2,479), Beaver Local (2,416) and Martins Ferry (1,848).

“Our girls are very well-balanced,” Parkinson said. “Our freshman, Cami, came in and bowled like a champ.”

And, now, Parkinson said, is the time for everyone to pick up the pace, especially with events like the inaugural OVAC tournament coming up January 25.

“You’re building toward tournament play now,” she said. “We have some team play yet to go, but we have our sights set on sectional, district and, hopefully, state again this year.

“Both teams are bowling solid.”
