Harrison Central topples Garaway on Senior Night

CADIZ — Harrison Central went wire-to-wire on Senior Night.

The Huskies (13-9) scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back in posting a convincing, 66-45, decision over visiting Garaway (10-12) in boys’ high school basketball action Friday night.

Senior Cruz Capers, playing his last regular-season contest on the home boards, netted half of Harrison Central’s points to open the game. He finished with 15 while also collecting five rebounds and running the offense effectively.

“We’re confident in those guys. They didn’t have a good game the other night, but that’s not the norm,” Harrison Central head coach Justin Clifford said of Capers, fellow senior Cale McAfee, Skylar Mazeroski and John Vermillion. “We expect those guys to do what they did tonight, and they played well.

“We executed really well on both ends.”

Vermillion, a promising 6-4 sophomore, just missed a double-double as he pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds while scoring nine points. McAfee hit a pair of threes and Mazeroski grabbed half-a-dozen rebounds while also playing well on defense.

Harrison Central led 17-9 after one quarter and increased the margin to 36-22 at the half as Kobe Mitchell netted half of his 32 points before the intermission.

Mitchell, who was recently named the Division III, Eastern District V Player of the Year, scored 11 in the third quarter as the hosts pulled away.

Harrison Central tallied the first nine points of the final quarter to seal the deal.

“This is the way a coach wants his team to be playing entering the tournament,” Clifford advised. “We played really well tonight. I’m proud of the guys.”

The Huskies are back in action Tuesday when they host the Morgan-Buckeye Trail winner in Division III sectional action.
