Bellaire’s Davis captains All-TL girls hoops

Prep basketball season has come and gone for area teams.

It was another solid season with impressive performances — both by teams and individuals.

Today, The Times Leader Sports Staff– with the help of area coaches — announce the annual All-Times Leader Girls Basketball Team, which features 18 of the top players and a coach from throughout The Times Leader’s coverage area.

The captain of the squad is Bellaire senior Katrina Davis, while Union Local’s Rob Barr has been named the coach of the year.

Here’s a capsule look at the honorees:

KATRINA DAVIS, Bellaire — This Big Reds senior almost literally did it all for Coach John Farrier’s squad this season.

She led the Big Reds in every statistical category. She scored 630 points, pulled down 201 rebounds, made 185 steals and passed out 66 assists. She also had four triple-doubles and posted an 18-steal game against East Liverpool in January.

Davis was named the state of Ohio’s Division III Player of the Year, Eastern District Player of the Year and the District 12 Player of the Year. She will play in the OVAC, North-South and District 12 All-Star Games.

“Kat is a straight winner,” Farrier said. “She makes winning plays and makes her teammates better. Obviously, she’s physically gifted and her numbers speak for themselves. However, I believe her mental knowledge of the game is her biggest asset. She understands positioning, strategy and personnel. I will definitely miss my ‘player-coach’ next year.”

REAGAN VINSKOVICH, Union Local — This talented freshman wasted no time in making an impact for Coach Rob Barr’s team.

Vinskovich was a go-to-players throughout the season on the interior, averaging 19 points and 12 rebounds per game.

Her fine season has been recognized by virtue of her placement on the Second-Team All-Ohio squad, First-Team All-Eastern District, All-Buckeye 8 and All District 12.

“Reagan had a wonderful season, and I don’t even think she’s scratched the surface of how good she can be,” Barr said. “She has size, speed and strength. In terms of basketball, she’s still learning, and that’s scary, because the sky is the limit.”

TORRE KILDOW, Union Local — Another talented freshman who was extremely impressive this season for the Jets.

Kildow averaged 16 points, five rebounds and three assists per contest en route to being named Honorable Mention All-Ohio.

Kildow was also named All-Eastern District and All-District 12.

“Torre’s ceiling may be the highest of all of the freshmen on our team,” Barr said. “She can do so many things and her skillset and basketball IQ are very advanced for someone so young. As with Reagan, she can be as good as she wants to be.”

CASEY KILDOW, Union Local — This Jets junior was a steadying force all season for Barr’s team.

Running the point guard spot, much of the time, Kildow averaged 10 points, passed out six assists and yanked down four rebounds.

Kildow was recognized on the All-Eastern District, District 12 and Buckeye 8 teams.

“Casey is our elder statesman and we go as she goes,” Barr said. “Her work ethic on and off the court is unparalleled. She’s a totally selfless player and makes everyone around her better.”

ASHLIE LOUDEN, Beallsville — This senior put forth a brilliant final campaign for Coach Tori Jarrett’s team.

The second-team all-Ohioan led the Blue Devils with a 17 points per game average. She also added five rebounds in helping to lead Beallsville to a 21-4 record, trip to the district tournament and another OVAC Class 1A title.

“Ashlie is a great shooter and a hard worker,” Jarrett said.

ASHLEY HOWELL, Beallsville — This Blue Devil post player was able to impact the game in a myriad of ways for Jarrett’s team.

Howell posted solid numbers with 16 points, seven rebounds and two blocks per contest.

She was named on the All-District, All-District 12 teams and finished with better than 1,000 points in her career.

“Ashley is a great defender and a great finisher inside,” Jarrett said.

TORY HENDERSHOT, Shadyside — This talented junior definitely filled up the stat sheet all season long for Coach Serge Gentile’s team.

Hendershot averaged a team-best 17.6 points a game, grabbed six rebounds and handed out five assists a contest. She also had three steals per game and eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark late in the season.

She was named to the All-Eastern District first team, all-District 12 team and Special Metion All-Ohio squad.

“Tory is an extremely dedicated player who is always in the gym working on her game,” Gentile said. “She’s the type of kid who doesn’t care about her stats. She only cares about winning.”

BAYLEE WACH, Shadyside — This multi-talented guard enjoyed a third consecutive impressive campaign for Gentile’s Tigers.

Wach absolutely filled it up from behind the 3-point arc once again en route to averaging 17 points a game. She didn’t just score the ball. She also averaged four rebounds, three assists and three steals.She also surpassed the 1000-point mark in January.

Her fine campaign earned her a spot on the All-Eastern District First Team, All-District 12 First Team and Special Mention All-Ohio.

“Baylee is another one who is constantly in the gym, working on her game,” Gentile said. “She’s extremely dedicated and a great teammate. She also doesn’t care about her own stats.”

RICHELLA SPIELVOGEL, Martins Ferry — This Purple Rider senior was a key cog in the success experienced this season under head coach Dave Reasbeck.

Spielvogel averaged 14.4 points a game and she finished the season with 316 points.

Spielvogel was a First-Team All-Eastern District, Special Mention All-Ohio and First-Team All-Buckeye 8 and District 12 pick.

“Richella had an outstanding year,” Reasbeck said. “She was one of the most dominating players around that no one really had an answer for. Her ability to score and rebound around the basket will be missed greatly.”

MADISON GING, Martins Ferry — This Purple Rider senior was a steadying force for Reasbeck and the OVAC 3A champions this season.

Ging averaged nearly 12 points a game and shot 64 percent from the foul line. She also hit 27 bonus goals.

For her fine season, she was named to the All-Eastern District, All-Buckeye 8 and All District 12 squads.

“Maddie was a constant for us,” Reasbeck said. “She and Shayla (Schuster) made up a good combination of handling the ball, making shots and applying pressure defense for us. Maddie was a big reason for our success at the end of the season.”

KALISTA FRIDAY, Monroe Central — This Seminole sophomore showed no signs of letdown this season for Coach Troy Baker’s team.

Friday helped lead the Seminoles to the Division IV district final thanks to scoring 16.7 points a game. She did much more than score, however. She passed out 6.1 assists, 3.9 steals and collected 3.7 rebounds per game. She also knocked down 85 percent of her foul shots and dialed up 52 bonus goals.

Friday was named First-Team All-Eastern District, All-District 12, All-MOVL and Special Mention All-Ohio.

“Kalista was a very dependable ball handler, scorer and rebounder for us,” Baker said. “She was also able to create good looks for her teammates with 159 assists. She’s an all-around, tremendous basketball player with a lot of skills.”

AMY BETTINGER, Monroe Central — This Seminole senior put forth an impressive season in the paint for Coach Baker’s team.

Bettinger averaged 11 points, while shooting 53 percent from the field. She also grabbed six rebounds a game and a force on the offensive glass with 77 rebounds.

“Amy led our team in rebounding and did a great job of protecting the rim,” Baker said. “She really improved her ability to score around the hoop and her offensive rebounding ability helped her cause. She was also a very smart defensive player for us the last few years.”

RYLEE STEPHENS, Barnesville — This Shamrock junior was a factor on both ends of the floor for Coach Jason Perkins’ squad.

Stephens averaged 13.8 points, five rebounds, 3 assists and three steals a game.

Along with this honor, she was named on the All-District 12 and All-Eastern District teams.

“Rylee had a great year for us,” Perkins said. “She doesn’t just fill one role, she fills many. She understands the game and her presence on the floor makes my job, as the coach, much easier.”

JAREN TUCKER, Bridgeport — This senior was able to score the ball in bunches for Coach Greg Harkness’ squad.

The 5-5 guard pumped in 19.7 points a game, while ripping down 4.5 rebounds. She was true on 72, 3-point goals.

She was named All-Eastern District, will play in the OVAC and District 12 All-Star Games.

“Jaren had a really good, all-around season for us,” Harkness said. “She truly embraced the leadership role for our team. She improved her game each season and that was a result of her hardwork. She finished with 981 points.”

MACY MALIN, St. Clairsville — This Red Devil junior was a solid contributor in every facet for Coach Stacey Agnew’s team.

Malin averaged 10 points, four assists and two steals per game en route to all-Eastern District and District 12 honors.

“Macy is a tireless worker who did about 90 percent of our ball handling,” Agnew said. “She was also our best defender. She was one of our captains, as just a junior, so we’re looking for great things from here this year.”

MEGAN VALUSKA, Buckeye Local — This Panther standout was the leader for a relatively young squad for Coach Tom Figurski.

Valuska averaged 8.4 points and 3.4 rebounds a game and was recognized on the All-District 5 team.

“Megan is a true student of the game,” Figurski said. “She has a very high basketball IQ and she took on a true leadership role this year with such a young team. She led the way on both ends of the floor.”

ALLI LONG, River — This senior standout became the go-to-player for the Pilots and head coach Rick Isaly this season.

Long — a four-year letterman — finished her career with 900 points and 700 rebounds.

She was named to the All-District 12 team and listed on the All-Eastern District squad.

“Alli has been a very dependable post player for us the last four years,” Isaly said. “She was a very hard worker and set good examples for the younger players and was a big factor in us winning back-to-back OVAC championships her sophomore and junior years.”

MCKAYLA DUNKLE, Harrison Central — This Huskies sophomore was a true bright spot for Coach Nick Yourkovich’s team.

Dunkle averaged a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds a contest. She also grabbed 253 rebounds for the season, which is the second most in Harrison Central history.

Dunkle was recognized on the All-Eastern District and District 5 teams.

“McKayla had a pretty impressive season that got overlooked by our record,” Yourkovich said. “She was our go-to-girl when we needed a bucket or a big rebound. She is a special player, who will only get better the next two years.”

ROB BARR, Union Local — This second-year head coach guided the Jets to a most memorable season.

Union Local finished the season 23-2. It played in the OVAC 3A final and in the district tournament with a squad that had nary a senior. The Jets won the Buckeye 8 title, defeating Indian Creek in the championship game.

“We had a very good season, but some of our goals went unfulfilled,” Barr said. “I think that will make us even hungrier next year. The individual accolades I have received are appreciated and very humbling. However, they are a direct reflection of the team, which was very talented and easy to coach. We need to keep working, get better and hopefully take this thing to the next level.”
