Jefferson County Elite 19A finish second at Chillicothe Tournament
CHILLICOTHE — Jefferson County Elite 19A advanced to the championship game of the Jim Jadwin Memorial Tournament Sunday afternoon before falling to Ashland, 12-9, at VA Memorial Stadium.
The Steubenville-based squad trailed 12-6 entering the top of the sixth before scoring three times to make things a little closer.
Luke Zorne led JCE’s 10-hit attack with three singles and a triple that drove in three runs. Klay Cottis and Anthony Sinicropi evenly divided four one-base raps and a pair of ribbies. Alec McBane also singled and had an RBI.
In the semifinals yesterday, JCE (16-5-1) defeated the Chillicothe Colts by a 10-8 count as Sinicropi turned in a brilliant relief effort, working four-plus innings with three strikeouts and a pair of walks, to earn the mound win.
Zorne, Aaron Ferguson and Zac Berger all had two hits for Jefferson County Elite 19A, with Zorne recording a triple and RBI. Cottis doubled in three runs and Blake Connelly registered an RBI.
On Saturday, JCE topped the Colts, 6-2, behind the pitching of Coy Amis. The Indian Creek product struck out five, issued one free pass and scattered four hits. Only one run was earned.
Cottis, Clayton Criss and McBane all had two singles, with Cottis and Criss knocking in a run each. Berger had a two-run double while Zorne and George Ash also doubled, with Zorne driving in a run.
Jefferson County Elite also defeated Athens Attack by a 5-2 margin as Trevor Boggess and McBane teamed on a five-hitter.
Ash had a pair of run-producing singles and Amis singled in two runs for the locals. McBane singled twice and Criss plated a run.
Each pitcher struck out two as Boggess worked four innings for the win. McBane earned the save.
JCE hosts Coshocton on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at the Indian Creek Middle School diamond in Mingo Junction.
