SHADYSIDE — Shadyside Athletics Director John Triveri confirmed Wednesday afternoon that a student-athlete at the school has tested positive for the coronavirus.

“We just confirmed (the positive) (Wednesday) morning,” Triveri said.

Shadyside just resumed workouts in all sports on Monday after shutting down for nine days because of a rash of positive cases involving recent graduates, who went on a trip to Myrtle Beach.

When the Tigers resumed workouts, Triveri explained they felt comfortable doing so because none of the positive cases involved a current student-athlete. However, despite that change, Shadyside is not shutting down its workouts again … at least as of yet.

“At this point, we have decided not to close everything down, but we’re allowing our coaches to make that call,” Triveri said.

Triveri did leave the door open that the school may eventually make the call to resume the suspension of workouts and conditioning should more cases develop in the coming days.

“If more positive cases arise, we will consider all alternatives,” Triveri allowed.

Using contact tracing, Shadyside has told families that if their students had interactions with the infected, they should quarantine for 14 days and they’re not permitted at workouts should that respective team continue.

“Our coaches have been notified and so have the parents of the kids who may have been exposed,” Triveri said.

Shadyside, which was the first school in the OVAC and is believed to be the first in Ohio to have suspended its workouts when it did so on June 20, set off a several-school chain in the coming days.

Since the Tigers’ decision, an additional five schools have suspended athletics. They are Bellaire, St. Clairsville, Martins Ferry, Buckeye Local and Caldwell became the latest when it announced Tuesday that a person affiliated with its athletic department had tested positive.

Wheeling Park announced Tuesday that one of its student-athletes had contracted the virus, but only his workout group had been affected. Dover has elected to suspend football due to a positive test.
