Big Red outlasts Brooke in 5A girls’ soccer semifinal

STEUBENVILLE — Trailing by a goal with less than a minute to play, a Brooke player ripped a shot on goal from inside the box. However, Big Red goalie Lakyn Blackburn made the save, allowing No. 2 seed Big Red to record a 3-2 victory against No. 3 Brooke in an OVAC Class 5A tournament semifinal Tuesday night on Reno Field inside Harding Stadium.

Chloe Petrelle netted the first two goals of the match for Big Red. Mary Marshall also tallied a goal, while Jaleyss Scales collected an assist.

Blackburn made seven saves on the night for the hosts.

CROSS COUNTRY

Barnesville Sweeps OVCCL Meet

HANNIBAL — River played host to an Ohio Valley Cross Country League meet Wednesday afternoon.

The Barnesville girls won the team race and were fueled by freshman Aubrey Johnson, who won the meet with a time of 21:11. Marah Bethel was third overall and second for the Shamrocks in 21:48.

River’s Mara Beard was second in 21:20.

The Shamrocks boys team also prevailed and produced the meet’s individual champion in Tyler Jenkins. He ran the 3.1 mile course in 17:57. Logan Dodd was third overall and second for the Shamrocks in 18:45.

GOLF

Buckeye Local splits triangular

RAYLAND — East Liverpool prevailed over Buckeye Local (180) and Indian Creek (187) with a round of 173 Tuesday afternoon.

Aiden Polanski led the Panthers with a 43.

John Marshall 190,

Weir 208, Brooke NS

WEIRTON — Matthew Douglas turned in a 44 to lead John Marshall to a victory over Weir and Brooke. Mason Orndorff supplied a 47 while Colton Sprowls shot a 48 for the Monarchs.

VOLLEYBALL

Shadyside d. Bridgeport

25-5, 25-1, 25-6

SHADYSIDE — The Tigers inched closer to wrapping up the Mid Ohio Valley League title with a sweep of Bridgeport.

Shadyside was led by sophomore Gentry Brown’s 11 kills, two aces and two digs. Tory Hendershot had nine aces, while Paige Gorby had four kills. Baylee Wach had two kills, three assists and Kylie Jo Baker donated six kills and two aces.

River d. Bellaire 25-18, 25-23, 25-13

HANNIBAL — The Pilots rolled to a sweep and repeat victory over the Big Reds Tuesday evening.

River was led by Rilyn Haught’s seven kills. Delaney Bolger and Hannah Raper each had five digs. Bolger had seven aces and two blocks as well.

Bellaire was paced by Bryanna Beckett’s 22 assists, nine digs and two kills. Jayden Lowe had nine digs, seven kills and three aces. Allie Ault had six digs and three aces.

Monroe Central d. Caldwell

25-14, 25-15, 25-14

WOODSFIELD — Abby Thompson tallied 19 points, six aces, three blocks and five kills as Monroe Central defeated Caldwell.

Alexa Marley was also solid for the Seminoles with 12 points and eight assists while Kynzi Bishop gathered seven kills and six assists. Kalista Friday also had six points and 16 digs.

Steubenville d. St. Clairsville

19-25, 25-19, 25-19, 25-21

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — After dropping the first set, Steubenville won the next three to secure a victory over St. Clairsville.

Lydia Wees had 13 kills for the Red Devils while Ela Brak tallied eight digs.

Union Local d. Barnesville

25-18, 25-6, 25-9

BARNESVILLE — The invading Jets soared to another three-set sweep Tuesday.

Leading the way for the undefeated Union Local was sophomore Torre Kildow, who had 12 kills, 11 assists and eight digs. Reagan Vinskovich — another talented sophomore — had eight kills and two blocks. Senior Casey Kildow had five kills, 19 assists and five digs. Baylee Rex added five kills and six digs.

For the Shamrocks, Ava McFarland had eight assists and five digs while Keirsten Adams supplied nine assists.
