St. C. wins OVGL championship

WHEELING — St. Clairsville and Barnesville have spent the entire golf season basically running roughshod through the Ohio Valley Golf League.

Thus it seemed only logical when the league crowned its season champion Thursday afternoon that the Red Devils and Shamrocks were the two teams to beat.

And that’s exactly how it worked out at Oglebay Park’s hot and sunny Crispin Course.

In the end, after nearly five hours of play wrapped up, the Red Devils went home with the top prize thanks to a team score of 325, which was one shot better than the Shamrocks.

“We just played Barnesville the other night in a match at Belmont Hills and it came down to the fourth score again, so we knew it would be tight,” St. Clairsville head coach Ryan Clifford said. “All of our kids play and work together (at Belmont Hills), so we thought it would be us or them. I am not sure we knew it be just a shot difference though.”

The Red Devils were led once again by their one-two punch of junior Saul Christ and classmate Will Foster. Crist was the runner-up medalist with a solid round of 3-over, 74.

Foster, meanwhile, led the tournament for much of the afternoon, but finished with a 76, which was three shots back.

Other Red Devil scorers included Brooke Chamberlain, who turned in a solid round of 82. Aiden Moran finished with a 93 as the fourth score.

“This is satisfying for all of the kids,” Clifford said. “Will and Saul have had a lot of success during the season, but we needed a couple of other scorers to win and we got just enough. This is a good, team-building win.”

Barnesville produced the match’s top scorer in junior Carter Wells, who continued his fine season. Wells used a birdie-birdie finish to overtake Foster and hold off Crist, who was playing a few groups behind.

All told, Wells posted a round of 73.

“There was some really good competition and I knew it was going to be a dog fight,” Wells said. “I had a rough idea (of the scores) on 17 and 18, but I didn’t know all of the scores. It’s nerve-wracking as you’re waiting on all of the other groups to finish.”

Barnesville’s other scorers that counted toward its 326 were Dryden Bauman’s 82, Colton Hines’ 84 and Jude Hannahs’ 87.

Joining Wells, Crist and Fosters on the All-OVGL squad, which encompasses the top six overall, are Martins Ferry’s Luke Krol (75), Monroe Central’s Zander Potts (77) and Magnolia’s Alex Parker (81).
