Union Local sweeps St. C. to stay perfect

MORRISTOWN — As has been the case for nearly the entire season, Union Local made quick work of its volleyball opponent.

Thursday night inside ‘The Hangar,’ the Jets (13-0) needed just 56 minutes in soaring past visiting St. Clairsville in straight sets. The scores were 25-19, 25-12 and 25-15.

With the convincing victory, Union Local has now won 39 of 40 sets it has played. The lone loss came at Harrison Central last week.

“These girls don’t get rattled. I’ve only seen them rattled once this year,” Union Local head coach Kaye Sechrest said. “They come to play each game. They do what they are supposed to. They shake things off and go for the next point.”

Behind the serving of senior Casey Kildow, the hosts ran out to a 5-0 lead and extended the margin to 12-2 at which point St. Clairsville head coach Christa Truchan called timeout.

The break in action seemed to calm the Red Devils down as they tallied 10 of the next 12 points to pull to within a point at 14-13. However, the battle-tested Jets remained cool and pulled away for the win.

With Casey Kildow at the service line, Union Local ran off the first eight points of the second set and was never threatened.

The two rivals traded points to start the third set, but with the Red Devils holding a 5-4 advantage, the Jets scored six straight points with Torre Kildow serving to grab the momentum.

“It really is a team effort. Serving is good. Spiking is good. Setting is good. Passing is good,” Sechrest pointed out. “It all starts with the pass and we passed the ball well tonight. When you’ve got setters like Casey and Torre and then hitters like Torre and Reagan (Vinskovich), it really helps.”

Torre Kildow, a jumping-jack sophomore, stuffed the stat sheet with 18 kills — some that nearly took the heads off of Red Devil players — 11 digs, nine sets, a like number of passes and two aces. Casey Kildow added 23 sets, seven digs, four kills and four aces. Lacy Bilyeu charted 32 passes and half-a-dozen digs, while Reagan Vinskovich chipped in five kills, five blocks and four digs. Emily Kellaway added 12 passes and Baylee Rex had three kills and a trio of digs. Chloe Doud had five passes and a pair of kills.

As a team, Union Local finished with 76 passes, 38 digs and 36 kills.

“One thing we’re working on is keeping the momentum when we have it, but we couldn’t get any consistency going,” Truchan said. “If one thing was working, another wasn’t.”

She said she was proud of her team despite the loss because they improved on some things from past outings.

“We had a really tough loss to Steubenville on Tuesday but they have responded to the things I’ve asked them to do,” she added. “We really worked on a lot of things we would see tonight and they did what I asked of them.

“Union Local is a really good team and you can’t make errors against them like we did tonight. We just need to clean up a few things for Saturday.”

Chloe Biancarelli led St. Clairsville with 14 assists and six digs. Lydia Wees added five kills, four blocks and three digs, while Alexis Thoburn had five digs and a like number of kills. Lauren Waseman finished with half-a-dozen kills.
