Prep Roundup: Barnesville’s Wells finishes 29th overall at state golf

UPPER ARLINGTON — Barnesville junior Carter Wells wrapped up a brilliant season with a solid showing in the final round of the OHSAA Division II State Golf Championships at the Ohio State University’s Scarlet Course.

Wells, who posted an opening-round 87 on Friday, posted a round of 79 to make an eight-shot improvement on Saturday despite the round being delayed an hour due to frost.

Wells finished 29th overall in the event, which featured more than 70 players.

In playing at the state tournament, Wells became the first Shamrock player in school history to achieve such a feat.

CROSS COUNTRY

Ferry boys, Barnesville girls win OVCCL titles

CONNORVILLE — Area cross country teams concluded their regular seasons Saturday at Buckeye Local High School with the annual Ohio Valley Cross Country League championship.

Martins Ferry posted 30 points to win the team title, while Bellaire finished second with 84 points.

Barnesville won the girls title, accumulating 67 points, while Martins Ferry was second with 83.

Bellaire senior Jacob Defibaugh claimed the individual title in a run away with a time of 16:12. Martins Ferry’s Elijah Smith was the runnerup in 16:50. Union Local’s Shawn Coe was third in 16:56.

Harrison Central’s Jasmine Arnold captured the female crown with a time of 19:08. Josie Hancock was second in 19:40. Barnesville’s Aubrey Johnson rounded out the top three with a time of 20:08.

VOLLEYBALL

Harrison Central advances in D-III sectional

CADIZ — The homesteading Huskies rallied to win three straight sets after dropping the opener. The final scores were 18-25, 25-12, 25-9 and 25-16.

The Huskies were led by McKayla Dunkle’s 22 kills. Maddy Butler had 10 digs and Lexi Ferguson added 27 assists.
