Barnesville retains Milk Cow Trophy

Shamrocks pin Jets in annual rivalry match

Barnesville’s Orion Smith seeks a pin against Union Local as referee Ray Jefferies watches closely. Smith eventually got the pin.

BARNESVILLE — Since the inception of the Milk Cow Trophy, Barnesville has yet to let loose of it. Wednesday night was no exception.

The Shamrocks won the first six matches for a 30-0 lead and cruised from there in a 60-18 victory over the Jets during a quadrangular wrestling meet inside the ‘Greenhouse.’

Freshman Jonathan Huntsman got the hosts off to a good start as he held on for a 10-9 decision over Colin Greenwood at 106.

Karson Milhoan (113) and Griffen Stephen (120) were each awarded forfeits as the margin grew to 15-0. Pins by Skyler King (126) and AJ Francis (132) bumped the count to 27-0 and Logan Tague completed the early onslaught with a 3-0 decision over Nathaniel Gibson at 132.

Union Local got on the board as Brody Myers pinned Bryce Hall in 2:53 at 138. Landon Crum (145) followed with a fall over Robby Nixon in 58 seconds, but Cameron Woods (160) stopped the run with a pin of Aidan Myers in 1:50.

The Jets’ Claude Romshak (170) picked up the Jets final triumph when he pinned Jacob Starr in 3:36.

Barnesville closed out the match with a forfeit to Ayden Hannahs (182); a 19-second fall by Orion Smith (195); a 25-second pin by Avery Clouse (220) and a forfeit at 285 to Jadyn Lucas.

With the victories, the Shamrocks continue to lead Martins Ferry for the OVAC Class 3A dual meet title. However, the Purple Riders can make up ground tonight when they dual at Steubenville.

“We got a lot of kids on the mat tonight and that is what this season is all about,” Barnesville head coach Jayson Stephen said. “We just want to get the kids as many matches as we can, and that’s what we’re trying to do.

“The Huntsman kid gave us a good start and we kind of took off from there,” he added. “We’re pretty good in our lower and middle weights, and our heavyweights are starting to come through.”

Barnesville also defeated Wellsville and Beallsville, which only had two wrestlers compete.

Union Local also topped both squads.

“We’ve got a lot of young guys that are getting experience as we go,” Union Local head coach Zack Powell said. “We’re getting there.”

Four Jets recorded pins in the win against Wellsville. They were Clay Akers (126), Logan Boone (132), Aidan Myers (160) and Romshak (170). Romshak’s fall came in 46 seconds which was nine less than Boone needed.

Union Local travels to Maysville on Saturday for a quad with Coshocton, Fairview and Lakewood.

Barnesville, meanwhile, heads west on I-70 to Heath for a quad.
