Shadyside fends off Buckeye Local, 71-61

SHADYSIDE – It was a bittersweet weekend for the Shadyside Tigers.

Coach Ed Andes’ charges suffered a tough one-point overtime loss to homestanding Monroe Central Friday night. Things got much better for the Orange 24 hours later as the Tigers topped a fine Buckeye Local squad, 71-61, in the Tigers’ Den.

Shadyside was hot from long range, draining 11 treys on the night. Andes also received solid performances from all six players who saw action.

Junior dandy Korey Beckett continued his sparkling play with his third straight 20-plus scoring night. The 6-1 sharpshooter poured in 27 points, including a trio of three-balls.

Senior Jacob Visnic was next in line for the Tigers with 14 points while freshman dynamo Benny Wach buried three treys en route to a 10-point night. He was coming off a 22-point outburst against Monroe.

The win evened Shadyside’s mark at 4-4. Buckeye Local, meanwhile, lost for just the second time in seven starts.

“We got nice contributions from everyone tonight. Korey had a really nice game,” Andes said. “Making those threes really opens up the floor.

“We did a much better job at the foul line tonight (8-of-12). That really hurt us at Monroe,” he added. “Buckeye Local is a nice team. They shoot it well. It was a nice way to bounce back.”

The Panthers had three players reach double digits, topped by Mason Brown’s 19 counters. Cameron Grabits delivered 16 points while Jake Mayle had 15 points.

“We knew Shadyside is capable of shooting the ball well. When Beckett is shooting like he was there isn’t much you can do against him. He is a very good player,” Buckeye Local coach Chris Heaton said. “The second quarter hurt us. We turned the ball over too many times and we got stagnant on offense.

“I was proud of our kids’ effort. We didn’t quit and closed it to five but couldn’t get over the hump,” he added. “Shadyside is a good team and they shot it well tonight. Give them credit.”

Buckeye Local came out red-hot, knocking down four first-quarter treys in gaining a 21-15 lead at the break. Brown fueled the Panther surge, dropping 12 points in the period.

The second quarter was all Tigers. The hosts rode a 13-point outburst from Beckett in the frame to roll into intermission with a 38-30 upperhand.

Shadyside built a 12-point lead (52-40) midway through the third period before the Jefferson Countians pared the deficit to 55-48 entering the fourth quarter. Buckeye closed to within 65-59 with just under two minutes to play. The Panther rally, however, was stymied via a Beckett goal followed by a steal and layup by junior Mason Vannest.

Visnic grabbed eight rebounds for the winners while sophomore Elijah Brock, saddled with early foul issues, snared six boards for the winners. Vannest dished out six assists while senior Jordan Joseph garnered eight points while again turning in a tenacious defensive effort.

Buckeye Local committed 14 turnovers. Shadyside was guilty of just nine miscues.

Both teams return to action Friday. Buckeye Local hosts Bellaire while Shadyside welcomes Shenandoah.
