Monroe’s Friday nets 1,00th point in win at Ferry; Union Local boys win again

MARTINS FERRY– It was a night to remember for Monroe Central junior Kalista Friday on Wednesday.

The Seminole point guard scored 24 points and eclipsed the 1,000-career point mark in helping to lead the Seminoles to a 60-50 victory against the Purple Riders.

Friday was complemented by Haylynn Hiles’ 12 points. Kynzi Bishop added nine and Jaysa Henthorn donated eight.

The Purple Riders (10-9) were paced by junior Allarah Jones’ 17 points. Classmate Maria Clark and freshman Danielle Lude each had 10.

Shadyside 58,

Barnesville 43

BARNESVILLE — The invading Tigers led 17-2 after one and cruised to another victory Wednesday evening.

Senior standout Tory Hendershot led the balanced Tigers with 20 points. Paige Gorby and Gentry Brown each had nine in top support.

Ellie Thompson hit four bonus goals for 12 to pace Barnesville. Lilly Ford added 11.

River 59,

Steubenville 43

HANNIBAL — The Pilots picked up a key win as they snapped a brief losing skid by toppling invading Big Red.

Talented freshman Ksley Harlon scored 24 points to lead the way for River. Rylee Knights had a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds. Kylie Piatt had nine.

Mikayla Abram led Big Red with 16.

St. Clairsville 48,

Harrison Central 46

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The Huskies saw their winning streak snapped Wednesday by the Red Devils.

St. Clairsville was led by Shae Brookover’s 15 points. Megan Malin had 14 points and Macy Malin added nine.

The Huskies (12-5) were paced by junior McKayla Dunkle’s 19 points. Brit Positano added 10.

River 51,

Harrison Central 50

CADIZ — Invading River bounced back from a tough home loss on Tuesday to avenge a setback from last month, edging the Huskies by a point.

The Pilots, who hit 10 treys, received 15 points from sophomore Brody Lollathin and 12 from classmate Ty Long. Freshman Kabel Isaly added 10.

Harrison Central senior Kobe Mitchell was up to his usual tricks, pouring in 29 for the Huskies, Junior Jonathan Vermillion scored 11 in top support.

Union Local 53,

Beaver Local 36

MORRISTOWN — The Jets made it six wins in a row Wednesday evening after taking care of Beaver Local.

The Jets were led once again by senior Andrew Martin, who pumped in 24 points. Classmate Luke Merritt added 11, while Zach Bateman and Nathan Meyer each had seven.

Beaver was led by Ethan Agnew’s 16.

Swimming

Ferry wins four events

WARSAW — Martins Ferry took part in a triangular Wednesday against River View and Coshocton.

The Purple Riders claimed titles in four events.

Jocelyn Reiner won the 200 free in 2:49.62. Lilly Masters claimed the 100 free in 1:14.22.

Sophomore Gia Starkey was the winner of the 500 free in 5:54.45.

Ferry’s girls also won the 200 medley relay in 2:33.74.

COLLEGE

West Liberty 117,

Alderson Broaddus 78

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. — West Liberty picked up a second-straight win with a 117-78 victory over Alderson Broaddus on Wednesday night at the ASRC. 

Will Yoakum led West Liberty with 23 points, while Dalton Bolon and Pat Robinson each had 18. Malik McKinney tossed in 12 and Zach Rasile had 10.

Wheeling 85,

WV Wesleyan 77

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. — Wheeling picked up its first win of the season with an 85-77 triumph on the road at West Virginia Wesleyan.

The Cardinals (1-4) connected on 52 percent of their shots from the field, and also made 12-of-25 from behind the arc. Jarett Haines led Wheeling with 21 points and seven assists, while Jay Gentry scored 19 points and had five rebounds. Toren Portee (14) and Brent Price (12) each reached double figure scoring, and Dayne Allen pulled down 10 rebounds.
