Bridgeport falls 3-0 to Frontier

BRIDGEPORT CATCHER Sean White tags out Frontier’s Jonas Schmidt as he tried to score in the sixth inning Tuesday on the Niekro Diamond in Brookside. The Cougars won, 3-0.

BROOKSIDE — One bad inning in the field cost Bridgeport in its high school baseball opener Tuesday on the Niekro Diamond.

Frontier manufactured two runs on a hit batter, error and two-out single in blanking the Bulldogs, 3-0. The Cougars (1-0) added an insurance tally in the sixth.

Bridgeport’s Dylan Gregorcic struck out 10 and walked just one in six innings of work. However, he had no support behind him — offensively or defensively.

The senior carried a no-hitter into the fourth before Tanner Smith’s groundball single through the right side of the infield broke it up and upped the count to 2-0. Frontier scored its first tally on an error.

“Dylan had double-digit strikeouts and only walked one, but we didn’t make the plays behind him,” Bridgeport head coach Zach Winland said. “It’s early in the season. We’ll get it worked out.”

The Bulldogs threatened in the first as they coaxed four base-on-balls from Frontier starter Nathan Bowersock. However, a line-drive double play snuffed it out.

Bowersock, a diminutive righty, threw 31 pitches (13 strikes) in the first inning, but settled down and threw only 41 in the remaining six frames. Fifty-three of his offerings went for strikes.

“He ended up being around the strike zone the rest of the game,” Winland said of Bowersock. “We tried to attack first pitches but we hit some at-them balls. Kudos to them. They made the plays behind him.”

Bridgeport’s lone hit — a two-out single — by CJ Fouty came in the second.

Bowersock only allowed two runners — both coming on errors — in the final five innings. He retired the final seven Bulldogs he faced and 16 of the last 18 after Fouty’s hit. He struck out four and didn’t issue a free pass after the first inning.

Bridgeport treks south on Ohio 7 today to meet River.
