Union Local cools down red-hot Martins Ferry

MORRISTOWN — Union Local cooled down the red-hot bats of visiting Martins Ferry Friday in high school softball action.

The Jets (2-3) rode the four-hit pitching of Kiera Gregor for a 6-5 victory over the Purple Riders (8-4) who had been averaging 13 hits a gamje during their five-game winning streak.

Casey Kildow led the winners’ nine-hit attack with two singles and a triple. Alleigh Cheatham slugged a two-run homer and Hannah Merritt drove in two runs with a pair of singles. Marissa McGary also singled twice to knock in a run. Ava Lucas had a run-producing base hit.

Taylor Bell knocked in two runs for Martins Ferry with a single and double. Ella McFarland, Maria Clark and Danielle Lude all had a RBI.

Union Local snapped a two-all deadlock with four runs in the fourth. Martins Ferry tallied three times in the fifth but couldn’t draw even.

Martins Ferry hosts Monroe Central in a noon doubleheader Saturday. Union Local treks to Lisbon to meet Beaver Local for a pair.

St. Clairsville 11, Cambridge 0

AT ST. CLAIRSVILLE, the Red Devils (3-3) exploded for eight runs in the bottom of the fourth to run-rule the visiting Bobcats on Senior Night.

Rachel Finnical and Emily Dubinsky each slugged a three-run double while Emma Wright singled twice. Hannah Thoburn added an RBI triple while Dekotah Namack and Abby Salisbury had RBI singles. Jenna Jaskowiak doubled.

Jaskowiak also picked up the win inside the circle with five strikeouts and one walk. She scattered two singles.

The Red Devils visit Cambridge on Monday.

Harrison Central 14, Beaver Local 4

AT LISBON, the Huskies (7-1) continued their fine play as Lexi Ferguson missed the cycle by a double and drove in two runs. Britton Positano knocked in three runs with a single and double. Danyel Beadling added a single and triple that drove in a run. Maddy Butler singled twice to collect an RBI. Sarah Touville and winning pitcher Tristen Kovarik each doubled home a run.

Kovarik fanned three, walked one and yielded four hits.

The Huskies welcome Bellaire for a noon doubleheader today high atop Sally Buffalo Park.

River 15, Barnesville 2

AT BARNESVILLE, the Pilots (5-1) received one-hit pitching from Katie Lively in taking out the Shamrocks in five innings.

Lively also drove in four runs with three singles and a double. Elizabeth McConn had a pair of ribbies with two singles and Ayden Kraft doubled.

BASEBALL

St. Clairsville 7, Cambridge 6

AT ST. CLAIRSVILLE, the Red Devils (6-2) scored three times in the first and added four more in the third in slipping past the visiting Bobcats at Memorial Park.

Luke Jozwiak smacked a three-run home run and Drew Sefsick picked up two RBI with a single and double. Tyler Tonkovich tripled and earned the save with four strikeouts in relief.

Hunter Hoffman [icked up the win with four Ks and a walk.

The Red Devils visit Don Coss Field in Cambridge on Monday.

Bridgeport 6, Buckeye Trail 5

AT BROOKSIDE, Cooper Dulesky singled and doubled twice to pace the Bulldogs over the Warriors on the Niekro Diamond.

Ciaran Flanagan got the win in relief of Dylan Gregorcic who fanned five in five frames.

Barnesville 10, River 0

AT BARNESVILLE, Gavin Carpenter tossed a three-hit shutout as the Shamrocks (5-1) blanked the Pilots in five innings.

Carpenter struck out four and walked one. He also helped himself out with two singles and an RBI.

Kyvan Johnson plated three runs with two one-base raps, while Colton Hines singled twice and doubled. Jake Edwards had a single and double that produced two runs. Jeremy Hunkler rapped a two-run double.
