Madonna grad Peterson wins Bordas & Bordas title

WHEELING — The Peterson family could spend hours sharing stories of their favorite moments on the golf course.

After Sunday, they have another tale to tell as Howie Peterson IV won the Bordas & Bordas Amateur Golf Classic at Oglebay’s Crispin Golf Course.

Peterson IV, the 2017 W.Va. Class A State Champion from Madonna and current member of West Liberty’s golf team, shot his lowest round of golf in his life on Day 2 of the tournament with a remarkable 63.

He turned in a card of 65 on Saturday and finished with a score of 128.

What made this win special was he was partnered with his father, Howie (Trey) Peterson III, whose father is a past winner of the tournament.

“It was really cool to have my dad sitting next to me in the cart the whole time,” Peterson IV said. “We were giving each other reads, he was making birdies, I was making birdies and we were just bouncing off each other all day long. Then, we got into the playoff for the Best Ball.”

Although the father-son duo lost in the playoff hole for the Best Ball Flight, it was still a great feeling for Peterson III to watch his son sit atop the leaderboard.

“It’s taken a lot of work, focus and concentration on his part,” Peterson III said. “My dad and I help him as much as we can but he’s put the effort and time in and it’s been fun.

“I started playing with my dad probably in 1977 or so. My dad has played with us for a lot of years so he’s very happy, as well.”

Cole Hand was the leader after Day 1 with a score of 63 but he came in with a 67 on Day 2 to finish two shots back of Peterson IV, who even impressed himself with his career day.

“The first day I was just hitting it close and I just wanted to continue to do that (Sunday),” Peterson IV said. “I wanted to get off to a hot start but I didn’t want to shoot myself out of it either. I exceeded my expectations on the front nine. I wanted to get to at-least 2 or 3-under on the front but I got to 5-under.

“I didn’t miss many shots this weekend. I hit everything fairly well. I had one hiccup when I four-putted on 13 but other than that I kept my game plan going and did what I wanted to do.”

Mike Wetzel (132), Bryan Myers (133) and W.Va. Class AAA State Champion Ryan Bilby (134) rounded out the Top 5.

Hand and teammate Kyle Wensel (124) defeated the Petersons and Bryan Myers and Jay Davis in a two-hole, rain-soaked playoff to win the Best Ball Flight.

John Zitkovic and Mike Davis (130) defeated Roger Waialae and Bobby Clark and Mitch Miracle and Rick Zandron in a playoff for the Senior Flight Best Ball title. Waialae and Clark entered this year as three-time Senior Best Ball champions.

Clark did, however, win the Senior Flight with a 137, edging out George Templin (138).

In the First Flight, it was Zack Hood (144) taking top honors over Anthony Reasbeck (147).

Kyle Voelker and Caden Myers (139) defeated Shayne Wilson and Jake Pennybacker in the First Flight Best Ball playoff.

In the Junior Flight, it was Nick Wetzel (140) defeating Wheeling Central’s Justin Doerr (144) and Wheeling Park’s Gavin Goodrich (144) for the crown.
