Buckeye Local grad Emily Holzopfel has demonstrated through her time at Wheeling University that she defines the term 'student-athlete.'
Holzopfel added another chapter to that last week when it was announced that she and two of her Cardinal women's golf teammates have been named All-American Scholars by the Women's Golf Coaches Association for the 2020-21 season.
The chief criteria for selection to the team is maintaining a grade point average of 3.50.
This marks the first time that Holzopfel has been listed on the team.
KALKREUTH AMATEUR
One of the area's premier amateur golf tournaments is quickly approaching.
The annual Kalkreuth Amateur Championship will be held at Oglebay Park's Speidel Golf Club on July 24 and 25.
The proceeds of the event continue to benefit the Easter Seals. The event has been generating an between $25,000 and $30,000 for the Easter Seals on the yearly.
More information will be forthcoming in the days and weeks.
SONS OF ITALY SCRAMBLE
The annual event was held last month at Oglebay Park's Crispin Course.
The winning team, which shot 14-under par, was comprised of Jason Wiggins, Mare Conaway, Adam Ofat and Gerry Trumble.
Finished second, two shots behind, was the team of Chuck Haggerty, Barry Cusick, Mike Miklas and Taylor Shane.
Also posting a 12-under and finishing third was the team of Tim Ciardelli, Bill Kahl, Chuck Shubat and Jeremy Pielich.
WHEELING PARK GOLF CLUB
The Bob Rider Memorial Medal and Handicap scoring event was held last Wednesday.
Mike Brickner prevailed with a round of 33. He was two shots better than Dave Yeager, Mark Maguire and George Melnik. Rich Humphrey rounded out the top five with a round of 37.
In the handicap scoring portion of the event, Matt DeSantis prevailed with a 32.
He was a shot better than Joe Wurtzbacher and Josh Green. He was two shots clear of a logjam of four players at 34.
ST. CLAIRSVILLE JUNIOR
GOLF INVITATIONAL
The St. Clairsville golf program will hold a junior tournament at Belmont Hills Country Club on Monday, July 19. The event is open to boys and girls ages 12 through college. There will be separate divisions based on ages. Boys 12U and girls 13U will play a 9-hole event. Boys 13-15, 16-18, girls 14-15 and 16-18 as well as college-aged players will play 18. There will be different tees for the different age groups as well.
The cost to enter is $35 for the 9-hole event and boys aged 13 and older and girls 14 and older the entry fee is $45. For more information, please contact Michele Merritt at 740-391-5678.
NICK GAUDINO
JUNIOR TOURNAMENT
The inaugural Nick Gaudino Memorial Junior Golf Tournament will be held on Tuesday, July 20 at Oglebay Park's Crispin Course. It will be a nine-hole tournament with six divisions and is slated for the first group to tee off at 12:45 p.m.
The tournament will be broken down into separate boys and girls divisions for 10th through 12th grade, 8th and 9th grader and seventh grade and below. The top three placers in each division, both boys and girls, will receive a trophy.
Pizza and pop will be provided for each participant after the event.
The entry fee is $8. Players in grades seventh grade and under may ride on a cart, with their parents, but other players must walk and carry their clubs or utilize a pull cart.
According to a release, Gaudino was a resident of Triadelphia and who caddied in his teenage years at Wheeling Park Golf Course. He was drafted to serve in the army in WWII and made four amphibious landings in the South Pacific.
In his fourth landing, he was seriously wounded, resulting him being multiply handicapped throughout the rest of his life. He spent nearly four years recovering in an army hospital. After his release from the hospital and the service, he played golf (mostly one handed) for more than 30 years as a member of the Wheeling Park and Oglebay Golf Clubs.

THE BARNESVILLE Bowling Golf Scramble will be held on Saturday, July 10 at Salt Fork State Park. The entry fee is $300 per team and there will be prizes awarded for a closest to the pin on all five, Par 3s. Also included are lunch, drinks and a cart. There will be door prizes and raffles as well. Proceeds from the event benefit the Barnesville bowling teams. THE 11TH Annual Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Scramble is being held on Saturday, July 17 at Cadiz Country Club. The entry fee is $75 per player with checks made payable to Vance Deihl Memorial Scholarship Fund. Please call to register and for tee times at 740-635-2069. The fee includes refreshments on the course, lunch at first turn, dinner after tournament, and prizes.
THE ANNUAL YMCA Scramble is slated for Friday, July 23 at Oglebay Park's Crispin Course. The cost is $250 per four-person team.
THE OHIO Valley Wrestling Officials Association will hold its annual golf scramble on Saturday, Aug. 14 at Cadiz Country Club. The event will begin with a shotgun start at 1 p.m. and dinner is slated to be served at approximately 6 p.m. The entry fee is $260 per four-person team and that fee includes golf, prizes, skins game, dinner and beverages. There will be prizes for the longest drive, longest putt and closest to the pin on selected par 3 holes. Sponsorship opportunities are also available, including a $500 major sponsor which includes entry for one team. There are also $100 honor roll sponsor and $50 hole sponsorships available.
