Barnesville claims title at MOVL golf

WHEELING — It sure didn’t take Barnesville long to make its presence felt in the Mid-Ohio Valley League.

The Shamrocks — competing in their first event since joining the league in June — pocketed their first league title thanks to an impressive performance at damp Crispin Course at Oglebay Park Wednesday afternoon.

Barnesville posted a 318 to win the team title and it was fueled by both the male and female medalist.

“We were excited for the challenge of this new league,” Barnesville head coach Jerry Robinson said. “(Winning this tournament) was one of the goals we set for ourselves and we’ve got some other goals ahead of us. You win with upperclassmen and we got that from our seniors today.”

As he’s done for the bulk of the last few seasons, senior Carter Wells — the lone returning area player to reach the state tournament last fall — led the way.

Wells played 18 holes in 2-over, 73. He was six shots clear of his nearest competitor, who was Frontier’s Karter Satterfield, who finished second with a 78.

“My short game could have been a little better, but I hit the ball pretty solidly, and I don’t think I left too many shots out there,” Wells said. “It feels good to win a new tournament on the schedule.”

The Shamrocks, who will play again at Crispin one week from today in the OVAC Class 3A Tournament, received a splendid round from Breanna Flood. She played as part of the boys’ squad and was its second-lowest scorer with a 79. That was also good enough for medalist for the female portion of the event.

Flood actually began her round on the 16th hole and rolled in a lengthy putt for the tournament’s lone eagle.

“I am really pleased with how Breanna shot,” Robinson said. “She’s been coming on lately. She’s so coachable and her putting is really starting to come around. She’s playing the best golf of her career right now, and we’re hoping she can win the OVGL and also the girls Ohio Valley tournament.”

Senior Dryden Bauman was third for the Rocks with a round of 80, which was good enough for All-MOVL. Senior Colton Hines rounded out the scoring with an 86.

Buckeye Local — also making its MOVL debut — finished second with a solid 343. The Panthers were led by All-MOVL player Aiden Polanski, who signed for a round of 80.

Frontier was third with a 351. While the aforementioned Satterfield led the way, Tice Curtis also garnered a spot on the All-MOVL squad with an 80.

Joining Flood on the girls’ All-MOVL squad were Shadyside’s Grace Green, who posted a 97 and River’s Keira Saksa, who recorded a 98.
