Bellaire boys open with a win; Monroe girls prevail

BRIDGEPORT — The invading Big Reds opened their season in impressive fashion, posting a blow-out victory over homestanding Bridgeport, 89-31.

The Big Reds shot out to a 25-6 lead after one and proceeded to outscore Bridgeport, 34-7, in the second quarter.

Bellaire was balanced in the scoring column with senior Owen Ward leading the way with 20 points.

Junior Jakob Dowling added 17, while sophomore Mayson Sochor went for 15.

Bridgeport was led by Gary Widmor’s 10.

Bellaire is in action Tuesday at Union Local.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Monroe Central 58,

River 50

HANNIBAL — Monroe Central made it two wins in as many outings Wednesday evening, toppling debuting River, 58-50.

The Seminoles were led by seniors Kalista Friday and Haylynn Hiles, who went for 15 and 14, respectively.

Trista Morris and Kynzi Bishop each had nine.

The Pilots were led by Hannah Raper’s 17. Sophomore Kelsey Harlan added 12 and Rylee Knight had 11 points and a like number of rebounds.

Harrison Central 18

CADIZ — The invading Colts shot out of the gate quickly and never looked back en route to a convincing victory against Harrison Central.

The Huskies were led by senior standout McKayla Dunkle, who had 11 points.
