Barnesville boys take opener; River, Monroe, Harrison win

OLD WASHINGTON — Barnesville received an impressive performance from senior Kason Powell and captured its opener Tuesday evening with a 65-52 win over homestanding Buckeye Trail.

Powell scored 31 points to lead three double-figure scorer. Jeremy Hunkler added 12 and Colton Hines went for 11.

River 64, Toronto 34

AT HANNIBAL, the host Pilots received 21 points from sophomore Kabel Isaly in running away from the visiting Red Knights inside the Richard Potts Memorial Gymnasium. Isaly hit five three-point baskets, which was half of River’s team total.

Kam Potts added 15 points and Brody Lollathin had 10. Potts drained three triples and Lollathin a pair.

Monroe Central 79, Bridgeport 35

AT WOODSFIELD, Jake Swisher buried eight bonus goals for 24 points as the Seminoles led 30-9 after one quarter and never looked back in rolling past the visiting Bulldogs (0-2).

Tucker Howell added 17 points and Malachi Rose-Burton chipped in 11.

Alex Moore paced Bridgeport with 15.

Harrison Central 59,

Indian Creek 58

AT WINTERSVILLE, the Huskies used a big third quarter in defeating the host Redskins.

Hayden Cassidy had a team-best 15 points for Harrison Central. Jace Madzia added a dozen.

Brooke Sweeps Ferry

WELLSBURG — The Martins Ferry swim teams hit the pool for the first time Tuesday night, but it wasn’t the results the Purple Riders were looking for.

Brooke won the girls’ meet 94-55 and completed the sweep with a convincing 115-7 triumph in the boys’ portion.

Martins Ferry’s Gia Starkey claimed the 500-yard freestyle in 6-minutes, 45.39-seconds. Teammate Maleigha Schultz won the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:27.61. The Purple Riders’ 400-yard freestyle team of Starkey, Schultz, Winnie Luong and Lilly Masters touched the wall in 4:50.37.
