Three UL grads win Toughman titles
WHEELING – Three of the five men’s champions at the 41st annual Ohio Valley Toughman Contest hail from western Belmont County.
Demitree “Hitman” Turner (middleweight), Trace “The Strawberry Cowboy” Roby (cruiserweight) and “The American Redneck” Bradley Huntsman (heavyweight) all collected Toughman jackets Saturday night as the event conclude its two-night stand inside WesBanco Arena.
For the 6-6, 254-pound Bethesda resident and Union Local High grad, it was his second consecutive title, but according to him, it won’t be his last.
To get his coveted jacket, Huntsman had to defeat Barnesville’s 6-6, 238-pound Nathan Carpenter. The 30-year-old “Fighting Pigeon” took out defending cruiserweight titlist Hunter Markovich, also from Barnesville, in his first fight Saturday night.
Huntsman defeated Barnesville’s Kaelan Hannahs in his semifinal bout, while Carpenter took out Steubenville’s Ryan Logsdon.
“I think we all knew who was going to be the champ,” the 23-year-old said. “We knew each other. Actually, we know each other pretty good. We bowl together in some leagues. I’m glad it was him I was fighting. I think we put on the best fight of the night.
“Actually, I wasn’t going to fight this year, but something told me to do it. I’ll be back, though.”
Turner, a Union Local graduate and former athlete, won a split decision over former champion Matt Marsh for his jacket. He also defeated St. Clairsville’s Duncan Pagano and Weirton’s Justin Gautier.
“I’ve got a great trainer in Johnny Haught and I knew if I did what he told me to, I would win,” Turner said. “I just needed to stay composed and know that in my heart, I had it.”
The 23-year-old Roby, who resides in Quaker City but graduated from Union Local, posted a first-round TKO over Martins Ferry’s 36-year-old Tim Tatman.
“All I wanted to do was come here and put people to sleep and take home a jacket,” Roby said. I won a title earlier in Clarksburg, but this is most likely my last. I just want to heal up.”
“Powerful” Ashon Cofield, from Cumberland, Md., won the lightweight title over Port Washington’s Logan Hursey, a former all-state wrestler at Newcomerstown. It was Cofield’s third title which automatically retires him from Toughman competition.
“Quicksand” Kyle Quisenberry took the welterweight jacket with a win over Brandon Swaney.
Women’s titles went to Alexis “The Ghost” Robinson (lightweight); Tonya “Hard Hands” Hopkins (middleweight); and “Killer” Kira Huff (cruiserweight).
