Another highly productive basketball season has come and gone.

Area players and teams put forth solid campaigns.

Included was an area trio of Korey Beckett, Ryan McCort and Jaizen Miles that earned All-Ohio accolades.

The honors keep coming for that trio as well as eight other area players who have been chosen for the annual All-Times Leader Boys Basketball Team.

The aforementioned trio has been chosen as the co-captains for the team, which is chosen by the T-L Sports Staff with the help of area coaches.

Here’s a capsule look at the honorees:

KOREY BECKETT, Shadyside – This senior was the definite go-to-guy for Coach Ed Andes’ Tigers this season.

Beckett averaged 17.9 points a night and connected on 56 bonus goals. He finished his career with 1,264 points and 213 treys. He also posted three rebounds, 2.4 assists and two steals a night this season, while shooting 85% from the foul line.

Beckett was listed as Third Team All-Ohio in Division IV as well as First Team All-Eastern District, District 12, All-OVAC and All-MOVL. He will take part in the OVAC All-Star Game.

“Korey worked really hard on his game in terms of being more than just a 3-point shooter,” Andes said. “As teams tried to take away his 3-point shot, he really developed into a guy who could score at all levels. He’s just a gym rat and a kid who loves the sport and loves working on his game. He got better and our team got better. He had a great season.”

RYAN MCCORT, St. Clairsville – This Red Devils’ senior had an impressive junior season and didn’t let up at all this season for Coach Ryan Clifford’s team.

McCort led the area in scoring at an impressive 22.6 points per game clip. He cashed in 53, 3-point goals and shot 83.3% at the foul line. He also yanked down five rebounds a game.

McCort has racked up the post-season accolades. He was Third Team All-Ohio, First Team All-Eastern District, District 12, OVAC and Buckeye 8. He will take part in both the District 12 and OVAC All-Star Games.

“Ryan was the unquestioned leader of our team,” Clifford said. “He was a guy who is never satisfied and works tirelessly on his game. He scored a ton of points despite every team on our schedule, game planning to stop him. I am really excited to see him play at next level.”

JAIZEN MILES, Martins Ferry – This Purple Rider senior was the go-to-guy for Coach Derek Edwards squad this winter.

Miles averaged 16.4 points a game to go along with 8.5 rebounds and a steal per contest.

Miles has earned a myriad of accolades, including Third Team All-Ohio in Division III, All-Eastern District First Team, All-District 12, All-Buckeye 8 and he will take part in the Ohio North-South All-Star Game as well as the OVAC and District 12 All-Star games.

“Jaizen really committed to becoming a great player for the last four years,” Edwards said. “He sacrificed a lot in order to become the player he did and that process hasn’t changed for him. He’s a high-character student-athlete. He’s not only excelled on the court, but also in the classroom through his sheer dedication. He set a great example of work ethic for our younger players.”

AVERY HENRY, St. Clairsville – This 6-7 post provided match-up problems for opposing teams on the nightly for Clifford’s Red Devils.

Henry – an Ohio State football signee – was a handful for opposing defenses on the interior. He averaged almost 17 points a game and 12 rebounds en route to a myriad of accolades including First Team All-OVAC, All-Buckeye 8, All-District 12 and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. Henry will play in the OVAC All-Star Game.

“Avery was a force on both ends of the floor and his improvement was a key factor to our success,” Clifford said. “He should be known as an example to other kids that it’s okay to live where your feet are. It would have been easy for him to look to the future, but instead he stayed loyal to the guys he grew up with and embraced competition one more time.”

CAMERON BEST, Buckeye Local – This Panther senior made major strides and according to his head coach, Chris Heaton, they happened because of his work ethic.

Best averaged 13 points a game to lead the way for the Panthers. He also handed out 2.3 assists, yanked down three rebounds and recorded 1.8 steals a game.

His season hasn’t gone unnoticed. He was named to the District V team, All-Eastern District squad and Honorable Mention All-Ohio. He took part in the District V game and will play in the OVAC All-Star Game.

“Cameron was one of the hardest workers I’ve coached,” Heaton said. “His improvement in his four years was second to none. He led us in scoring, but defensively, he took it upon himself to guard the other team’s best player each game.”

BEEZER PORTER, Union Local – This Jets junior became a model of consistency in all phases of the game for Coach Zach Delman’s squad this winter.

Porter averaged 14 points a game, while handing out 3.2 assists and collecting 2.8 rebounds a game. He also recorded two steals a game and knocked down 39 bonus goals, while shooting 77.3% from the foul line.

Porter has earned All-Buckeye 8, All-Eastern District, All-District 12 and wason the All-Ohio listing.

“Beezer had a slow start to the season, but really got it going for us midway through the year,” Delman said. “Serving as our primary ball handler put a lot of pressure on him that did not phase him by the end of the year. He’s a really hard worker who could be primed for a big year next season.”

JACE MADZIA, Harrison Central – This junior did a little bit of everything for Coach Justin Clifford’s team last winter, developing into one of the area’s more versatile players.

Madzia averaged 14.9 points, 6.8 rebounds and 3.4 assists for the Huskies.

Madzia was listed on the All-Eastern District team, District V team and All-Buckeye 8 squad.

“Jace had a great year for us. He did it all,” Huskies head coach Justin Clifford said. “He handled the ball, rebounded, scored and distributed it. He really grew as the (season) went on and became one of the all-around better players around.”

KASON POWELL, Barnesville – This Shamrocks senior put together another memorable, impressive campaign for Coach Johnny Hines’ squad.

Powell – a 6-2 swing player – averaged 16.3 points a game to lead the team and eclipsed the 1,000-point barrier for his career. He also charted 97 rebounds, 97 assists and 37 steals for the season.

Powell was listed on the All-Eastern District, District 12, All-MOVL and All-Ohio squads.

“Kason’s on-court accomplishments speak for themselves,” said. “But, and I know it sounds cliche, he’s an even better young man off the court. He was truly a blessing to be around and a true pleasure to coach.”

MALACHI ROSE-BURTON, Monroe Central – This senior point guard was a stat sheet stuffer for Coach Jon Perkins’ team.

Rose-Burton finished with a 15.1 points a night scoring average. He also collected 6.7 rebounds and handed out 4.8 assists a game.

Rose-Burton has earned a myriad of accolades, including All-Eastern District, District 12, Special Mention All-Ohio and All-MOVL. He will play in both the OVAC and District 12 All-Star Games.

“Malachi was a leader on and off the floor for us,” Perkins said. “His ability to get to the basket is outstanding. He’s extremely unselfish and was an excellent distributor for our offense. Plus, he drew the assignment of guarding the other team’s best player, regardless if it was a post or a guard, every night. He made those around him better and allowed us to have the success we did as a team.”

BRODY LOLLATHIN, River – This junior was a model of consistency, on both ends of the floor, for Coach Mark Romick’s squad.

Lollathin averaged 13 points a game. He also was a solid rebounder, leading the squad, and distributor of the ball and one of the team’s top defenders.

Lollathin earned First Team All-Eastern District, District 12, All-MOVL and was listed on the All-Ohio team.

“Brody is the type of player all coaches love because he’s unselfish, hard worker and a great defender,” Romick said. “Even on nights when he wasn’t scoring, he found ways to positively impact the game. That’s what good players do. Brody can score in a variety of ways, which made him a tough matchup.

OWEN WARD, Bellaire – This Big Reds senior put the finishing touches on a solid career in the Red & Black with a strong final campaign for Coach J.R. Battista’s team.

Ward averaged 13.6 points a game this past season to go along with five rebounds and three assists per contest.

Ward was listed on the District 12 and All-Eastern District squad as well as All-OVAC. He will take part in both the District 12 and OVAC All-Star Games.

“Owen is a hoops junkie who is always working on his game or looking for a pick-up game,” Battista said. “He’s a highly skilled player whose best basketball is still ahead of him.”
