Shadyside baseball sweeps River; Ferry girls lose

HANNIBAL — Shadyside completed the season sweep of the homestanding Pilots on Thursday, 12-2.

Rhys Francis was sharp on the mound with eight strikeouts and nary a walk in earning the win. He also drove in three runs and doubled.

Senior Korey Beckett had three singles and two RBI, while classmate Bryce Amos posted a double, single and three RBI. Mason VanNest drove in three runs and singled. Cole Micker doubled.

Elijah Wayt had a RBI single for the Pilots and Brody Lollathin doubled.

Steubenville Catholic 2, Bellaire 1

STEUBENVILLE — The homestanding Crusaders scored twice in the bottom of the sixth to stun the invading Big Reds.

Bellaire was led at the plate by Kaden Banal, who had a pair of singles and drove in the team’s lone run. Jakob Dowling had a double and a single, while Chance Maffe tripled.

Buckeye Local 12, Bridgeport 2

CONNORVILLE — The Panthers struck early and often en route to a mercy-rule defeat of the Bulldogs on Thursday.

Jacob Berry picked up the mound win with nine strikeouts and three walks. He helped his own cause with a triple, single and four RBI. Ethan McHugh had two triples, a single and drove in a run, while Matt Scott had a single and three RBI.

Linsly 11, Union Local 0

MORRISTOWN – Linsly scored eight runs in its first at-bat and never looked back en route to a mercy-rule victory against the Jets.

Brodie Selmon was the pitching victory with eight strikeouts and a walk. He also had a RBI single. His brother, Jack, who serves as the catcher, had two singles and a like number of RBI. Collin Paull had two singles and a RBI.

Union Local was limited to three singles.

SOFTBALL

Edison 2, Martins Ferry 1

RICHMOND – The Wildcats dealt the Purple Riders their first loss of the season on Thursday.

Becka Evans was solid in the circle in earning the complete-game win. She fanned three and only yielded five hits. Alayna Meadows and Presley Meadows each had a RBI hit for the Wildcats.

The lone extra base hit was a solo home run by senior Hunter Pollock.

The Riders will need to shake off the setback quickly since they are scheduled to meet Shenandoah at 6 p.m. for the OVAC Class 3A title.

Union Local 3, Fort Frye 1

MORRISTOWN – Lauren Miller’s two-run triple with two outs in the first inning capped a three-run outburst and senior Kiera Gregor held the cadets in check.

Hannah Merritt singled twice for the Jets (8-5). Torre Kildow doubled.

Union Local hosts Barnesville today at 5:30 for the Milk Jug.

Harrison Central 18, St. Clairsville 5

ST. CLAIRSVILLE – Sarah Touville drove in six runs with a double and a home run as the Huskies blew the game open with eight runs in the top of the seventh.

Maddy Butler singled twice and drove in a pair of runs, while Rylie Smith singled in two runs. Winning pitcher Tristen Kovarik doubled in a run and struck out five.

Hannah Thoburn singled and homered to plate two runs for the Red Devils. Miranda Carman singled twice.

The hosts were guilty of 14 walks and made eight errors.

Magnolia 6, River 3

SARDIS – The Blue Devils doubled up the host Pilots by scoring three times in the top of the seventh.

Raylee Schmidt singled, doubled and knocked in a run for River. Paige Barkes singled in the other.

Wheeling Central 7, Barnesville 1

Barnesville 8, Wheeling Central 0

BARNESVILLE – The Shamrocks and Maroon Knights split a pair of games at Memorial Park.

In the opener, the Knights received a strong pitching game from Josie Frizzell, who struck out nine and walked one. She also had two hits.

Ashlee Baker had a home run, single and two RBI. Natalie Yates had two singles, a triple and drove in a run.

The Shamrocks received a solo home run from Payton Dudzik.

In the second game, freshman Abigail Johnson picked up the win in the circle with two strikeouts. Maddie Schaffer had two triples, a home run and drove in two runs, while Ellie Thompson had a triple and RBI. Savanna Robinson had a triple, home run and three RBI.

Cambridge 8, Bellaire 5

NEFFS – The invading Bobcats picked up a victory over the Big Reds, who committed four errors.

Abby Mann had a single, double and RBI to help lead the Bobcats. Goldman had a single, double and a solo home run.

The Big Reds were led by Sophia Porter’s three singles. Gianna Schmidt had a double and two RBI. Majestique Jackson had a single, double and RBI. Lizzie McAninch and Taylor Menendez each doubled.
