SHADYSIDE – Ohio’s Finest – the Shadyside Relays – was held on maybe Ohio’s finest weather day of the year thus far as upwards of 20 schools took part in the 51st running of the meet at sun-drenched Fleming Field.

Along with the superb weather conditions came impressive marks as the Shadyside boys and St. Clairsville girls sprinted their way to the respective titles.

The Tigers finished with 112 points, which was 30 better than runner-up Bellaire. The Red Devils, meanwhile, accumulated 123 points over the course of 18 events and finished 24 points ahead of Linsly.

BOYS

The Tigers put forth arguably their most impressive showing of the season, winning six events.

Fueling the charge was senior speedster Mason VanNest, who continued his fine spring of playing multiple sports. A short time before he played shortstop for the Tiger baseball team in an OVAC baseball semifinal, VanNest won the high-point track sprint award with 22.5 points.

He got to that total by virtue of impressive efforts in the 100 and 200 meter dashes where he ran personal-best times of 10.95 and 22.16.

He also helped the Tigers cap the meet championship by running a leg on the 4×4. He was joined by Wyatt Reiman, Kooper Chimley and Andrew Osman. The quartet broke the tape in 3:35.37.

Earlier in the meet, Reiman claimed another high jump title by clearing an impressive 6-6. Chimley, meanwhile, was also an individual winner, capturing the 400 in 52.48.

The Tigers’ shuttle team of Nathan Booth, Chimley, Osman and Dylan Booth checked in at 1:01.74 to win the hurdle relay.

The runner-up Big Reds got off to a strong start – as they usually do – in the field events thanks to the work of senior standout Colt Sechrest.

Sechrest posted the only meet record of the day when he won the discus with a twirl of 175-7. He broke his own record by more than four feet.

The reigning state discus runnerup also won the shot put with a heave of 49-1 ½.

Sophomore Mayson Sochor skimmed over 10 hurdles in 15.69 to win the 110 highs.

The Big Reds 4×2 team of Khalil Kimbro, Sochor, Maurice Webb and Mac Mac Pettigrew turned in a 1:36.76 to win the two-lap relay.

Linsly finished third in the team standings with 73 points.

The Cadets team of Colby Gibbons, Malte Feil, Atley Cowan and Felix Reitter passed the baton around the oval in 45.90 to claim the 4×1.

St. Clairsville had a strong showing by claiming two events.

Individually, Karl Kain won the pole vault with a 13-6 clearance.

The Red Devils 4×8 team continued its strong season when the foursome of Jack Gasber, Gannon Kazmirski, Ben Shields and Nate Thornburg won the distance relay with a time of 8:29.57.

Weir’s Kanye Green was the Red Riders only champion. He won the long jump with a mark of 20-5 ¾.

Wheeling Central’s Aiden Scott was the champion of the 800, circling the track twice in 2:02.40.

GIRLS

St. Clairsville’s speed and depth was simply too much for the Cadets. The Red Devils won eight events along the way and scored in numerous others.

Senior standout Emily Thompson was a double individual winner for the Red Devils. She won the pole vault (11-0) and the high hurdles (17.36).

Sophomore Emma Henry posted a couple of season-best times en route to winning the 100 and 200-meter dashes. She ran 12.95 and 26.96, respectively.

The Devils also captured four of the five relay events.

The 4×1, which included Madie Stock, Haven Brak, Thompson and Henry, posted a 51.96 for the win.

The 4×2, comprised of Brak, Laili Dombrowski, Lauren Powell and Henry, clocked a 1:53.47 for the title.

The 4×4, which consisted of Allyson Evonek, Stock, Lacy Tuttle and Delaney Florence, ran 4:37.73.

The shuttle team posted a 1:13.00. It consisted of Sydney Miller, Florence, Alivia DaRe and Thompson.

The runner-up Cadets picked up a trio of wins along the way, including freshman Haylen Cook, who won the 300 low hurdles in 51.36 by a hundredth of a second over St. Clairsville’s Florence.

Senior Ally Hicks ran eight laps in 13:18.04 to win the 3200 meter run. That capped an impressive distance double because earlier she ran a 5:52.67 to win the 1600.

Bellaire’s only winner was senior Katelyn Hart. She won the discus with a solid mark of 115-10.

The host Tigers picked up a win in the long jump thanks to senior standout Paige Gorby. She leaped off the board to a mark of 16-11 for the title.
