Area youth golfers shine in Elks Tourney

WHEELING — The 42nd annual Elks Junior Tournament was held last week at Oglebay Park’s Crispin Course.

St. Clairsville sophomore-to-be Andrew Abel shot an impressive round of even-par, 71, to win the overall title as well as the 13-15 year old bracket.

Abel edged out Linsly’s Adam Gill for the title in the age group. Gill fired an impressive 2-over, 73.

John Marshall’s duo of Colton Sprowls and Ethan Cook finished first and second, respectively, in the 16-18 year old division with rounds of 75 and 76. Wheeling Central’s Ryan Costanzo and Shadyside’s Luke Bell were third and fourth with 78 and 79.

Behind Abel and Gill, in the 13-15 year old division, St. Clairsville’s Evan Fix and Wheeling Central’s Luke Tiu were tied with a round of 75. Luke Simonetti and Raymond Steed finished fourth and fifth.

Trip Morrison shot an 82 to win the 10-12 year old division. Andrew Bienick, who is just 6 years old, won the 7-9 year old division which played nine holes at the par 3 course. Bienick shot a 33.

In the girls’ competition, Elise Abrams won the 16-18 year old grouping with a 95. She was a shot better than Barnesville’s Breanna Flood.

McKensie Armstrong posted a 91 to win the 13-15 year old group, while Wheeling Central’s Madeline Potts posted a 97 to finish second.

Ellie West finished with a 106 to win the 10-12 year old division.
