Moundsville sweeps DH

Expos top Maynard, Barton; move to 10-3

MAYNARD’S TYLER Ramsay is congratulated by his teammates after slugging a three-run homer in the bottom of the first inning Sunday. However, the Indians blew a 6-2 lead in the seventh and eventually lost to visiting Moundsville, 8-7, in Ohio Valley Baseball League action on Firemen’s Field inside the Community Park.

CRESCENT – Chicago Cubs Hall of Famer Ernie Banks once said ‘it’s a nice day to play two.’

Sunday was certainly a good day for a doubleheader as far as Moundsville was concerned. It picked up a pair of Ohio Valley Baseball League road victories from Maynard and Barton. However, the two wins came in totally different ways.

In the opener, the Expos (10-3) rallied for five runs in the top of the seventh and one in the eighth to nip the Indians, 8-7, on Firemen’s Field inside the Maynard Community Park. They packed up their gear and made the short trip to Pramesa Park where they carried that momentum over with a 11-2 shellacking of the Braves on Henning Field.

“It was fun,” Moundsville player/manager Bryan Courts said of the long afternoon. “It was a little tough in the first game, but we battled back. We kept that momentum going in the second game.

“Our pitching was really good, especially Isaac (Hines) in the second game,” he added. “Noah (Neely) did a good job in the first game. We finally strung some hits together.”

Trailing Maynard 6-2 after six innings, the first-place Expos exploded for five runs to take a 7-6 lead as Russell Schwertfeger singled in a run before Brandon Corley drove in a pair with a one-out single.

Bryce Rayl’s groundout made it 7-6.

Maynard (5-7) drew even in the bottom of the inning on Caden Price’s sacrifice fly, but Eric Cover’s sacrifice fly in the eighth plated Gino Barber with the winning run.

The loss spoiled a fine outing on the mound by Tyler Ramsay. He went into the seventh before tiring. He struck out six and yielded half-a-dozen hits.

Russell Schwertfeger gave Moundsville a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning with an opposite-field blast over the fence in left.

Ramsay gave the Indians a 3-2 edge when he sent a drive over the fence in left-center in the bottom of the inning.

Schwertfeger also doubled in a run to finish with three ribbies, while Corley singled thrice and collected two RBI.

Doug Clark singled and doubled for Maynard, while Matthew Busby singled in a run.

In the second game, Moundsville tallied at least one run in each of the first four innings against the Braves (5-7), who committed four errors in the first three innings.

Joel Wise missed the cycle by a triple and recorded three RBI, while Rayl also drove in a trio of runs with two singles and a double.

Courts and winning pitcher Isaac Hines both had a pair of singles, with Hines knocking in a run.

Hines fanned six, walked three and gave up just five hits.

Jake Probst and Gaetan Sinisgalli had RBI singles for Barton.

“We played like a JV team and Moundsville played like the New York Yankees,” Barton manager Billy Timko offered. “That’s about all I have to say.”

Earlier in the day, Barton dropped a 4-2 decision to visiting Wheeling.

Jarrod Jones singled and doubled for the Pioneers while George Ash singled in a run and Chris Furka drove in one with a sacrifice fly.

Matt Fouty and Nick Scott both singled twice for the Braves, with Fouty recording an RBI. Drake Dobson doubled.

Maynard travels to Barton tonight at 6, while Moundsville travels to Martins Ferry.
