Doe, LaFallotte tabbed for OVAC Hall of Fame
WHEELING – Two more athletes have been chosen for enshrinement into the Ohio Valley Athletic Conference Hall of Fame, joining the six previous members announced for the Class of 2023.
Woodsfield’s Lance LaFollette and Warwood’s Steve Doe have been selected as the Hall of Fame honorees from the decade of the 1970s.
Those already tabbed for the 2023 HOF ceremonies include Barnesville’s Jennie Castle and Union Local’s Koel Davia representing the decade of the 2000s, while Magnolia’s Justin Fox and Madonna’s Max Nogay are the selections for the decade of the 2010s.
In addition, the enshrines from the 1990s are Jessica Hines of Barnesville and Martins Ferry’s Fred Ray while the 1980 honorees are Tim McCrate of Barnesville and Shawn Straughn of Bishop Donahue.
Below is a capsule look at each of the honorees from the decade of the 70s:
STEVE DOE, Warwood (Class of 1976) – Doe was a three-sport star as well as a standout in the classroom during his Viking prep career. The 6-3, 215-pounder excelled in football, wrestling and track.
On the gridiron, Doe was a two-way starting tackle for three seasons. As a senior, Doe was accorded All-City, All-Valley, All-OVAC and All-State first-team laurels.
He participated in the OVAC Rudy Mumley All-Star Football Game. Doe was also awarded the prestigious “Chuck Howley Award” as Warwood High’s top student-athlete.
His gridiron exploits earned him a scholarship to Ohio University. In Athens, Doe earned three letters and started two seasons at middle guard. He also earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in industrial technology.
In wrestling at Warwood, Doe competed for three years in the unlimited heavyweight classification for Coach Eric Carder.
He placed fifth in the OVAC Tournament as a senior, helping the Vikings capture the overall all-class conference championship. He went on to pocket the West Virginia state championship.
Doe was also a gifted weight man for the Vikings’ track team. He enjoyed a sparkling senior campaign, establishing a West Virginia prep record in the discus en route to winning the state meet championship.
Doe also placed fifth in the state meet shot put event. His efforts helped propel the Vikings to the state team title.
LANCE LAFOLLETTE, Woodsfield (Class of 1979) – Lafollette ended his Redskin football career for legendary coach Jay Circosta as one of the premier wide receivers in OVAC history.
When he completed his Woodsfield grid career, the prolific wideout established Ohio Valley records for receiving yards in a season (886 yards) and touchdown catches in a season (13). He still remains as the Woodsfield/Monroe Central leader in receiving yards.
LaFollette was a first-team All-Ohio honoree as a senior to go along with first-team All-OVAC, All-PVC and All-Eastern District laurels. He was also tabbed PVC Lineman of the Year.
The glue-fingered receiver was also first-team All-OVAC and All-Eastern District as a junior.
After picking up his Woodsfield High diploma, LaFollette took his grid skills to West Liberty, where he again sparkled as a receiver.
Playing under two different head coaches (John Westenhaver and Larry Shank), he landed many passes and many honors.
LaFollette established Hilltopper records for receptions in a game (12) and in a season (58). Both marks have since been broken. He was a three-time All-WVC honoree and, in 1981, he was tabbed as West Liberty’s MVP. That same season, he was accorded NAIA All-American honors.
The former Redskins standout was honored twice (1979 & 1984) by the Upper Ohio Valley Dappers Dan.
In addition to his outstanding football career at Woodsfield, LaFollette enjoyed success in hoops and on the diamond.
He was a two-year starter in basketball. He was a double-digit scorer, earning All-PVC honors.
In baseball for the Redskins, LaFollette was four-year starter as a middle infielder, initially as a second baseman then moving to shortstop for Circosta. He batted over .400 as the team’s leadoff hitter as a senior.
LaFollette’s senior year was steeped in championships as Woodsfield captured PVC crowns in football, basketball and baseball that year, a fete that no other school had ever accomplished.
The 19th annual OVAC Hall of Fame Induction will be held at WesBanco Arena in Wheeling on Saturday, Aug. 12.
The OVAC Hall of Fame, which is sponsored by Robinson Automotive Group, will announce members of the Class of 2023 every two weeks for the next couple of months.
