Bellaire routs River in softball, 15-5
ST. JOE – Bellaire softball coach Dave Menendez has been waiting all season for his Lady Big Reds to play a complete game and his team did just that Friday afternoon against visiting River.
Taking advantage of nine hits, 10 walks and seven Pilot errors, Bellaire scored early and often in rolling to a five-inning victory.
Freshman No. 9 hitter Marissa Pacifico collected a triple and home run while chasing home three runs and Riley Porter pitched three innings in relief to pick up the win in the circle as the Big Reds routed River by a 15-5 margin at Bellaire Middle School.
“That is the first complete game we have played all season,” Menendez said with a smile. “And the fact that we did not commit and error is absolutely huge for us.”
The Big Reds (6-9) got things started with four runs in the home-half of the first, thanks in large part to River (7-9) mistakes. Allie Ault led off with a base hit, stole second and went to third on a wild pitch. After Sophia Porter walked Bellaire used a double steal to plate the first run of the game with Porter being thrown out at second.
Riley Porter walked to keep things going before Gianna Schmidt reached on an error. Both of them scored on an error before MJ Jackson walked and eventually came around on the Pilots’ third miscue of the frame to make it 4-0 after one.
Sophia Porter made it 5-0 in the second when she doubled, went to third on a wild pitch and scored on another River error.
Coach David Wright’s Pilots came to life in the third thanks to the long ball. Losing pitcher Addison Kovach began the inning with a home run to straight away center field. After Ava Wohnhas walked Rylee Knight followed with a two-run blast with Hannah Raper going back-to-back to cut the deficit to 5-4.
The Reds, who had five runs but only two hits through two frames, got the bats going in the third as well with Lizzie McAninch blasting a one-out solo home run to make it 6-4. Following a walk Ashlyn Rose doubled and Pacifico brought both of them home with a triple down the right field line. Ault then tripled to the same spot and later scored on an error to push the margin to 10-4.
Knight’s second homer of the game, a solo-shot with one out in the fifth was her eighth of the season, setting a new River school record.
Bellaire capped things off with five in the bottom of the inning with three walks and an error lending a hand. Pacifico led off with a home run while Schmidt had a two-run single in the frame and Rose chased home the game-winning run with a two-out base hit to center.
In all, the Big Reds had seven runs score by hitters that either walked or reached on an error.
“We are usually on the other side of things like that,” Menendez added. “It was nice seeing Pacifico have a good game, she is only a freshman and doesn’t start every game for us. Overall, everyone contributed (Friday) and that is what we preach, even though it is usually just one or two girls doing the hitting on any given night.”
Pacifico, Rose and Ault each had a pair of hits for Bellaire while Kovach and Knight had two hits each for River.
“You can’t have that many walks and errors,” Wright said. “Their bats got hot and when you put the ball in play you put stress on the defense and we just didn’t react well. We couldn’t hold them down at all.”
