Shadyside pulls away from Bridgeport in softball, 10-2
Shadyside senior Gentry Brown swings at a pitch during Monday’s game at Bridgeport. She hit a home run later in the game and drove in three to help fuel the Tigers to a 10-2 victory.
WOLFHURST — It took Shadyside a little while to get going at the plate Monday afternoon on sun-drenched Irene Ehni Memorial Field.
When the Tigers cranked it up, however, they really it going.
Shadyside pounded out 12 of its 14 hits and scored all 10 of its runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings and posted a 10-2, repeat win over the host Bulldogs.
“It was a slow start (offensively), but we just had to get the train rolling,” Shadyside head coach Bobby Gorrell said. “We got the train rolling, the girls jumped on board and we were able to put some hits together.”
Shadyside, which spotted Bridgeport a run in the second, knotted the game in the fourth and then took charge in the fifth.
After the lead-off hitter was retired on an innocent come backer to the circle, Shadyside proceeded to string six consecutive hits together.
Seniors Gentry Brown and Bella Honeywell provided the big blasts. Brown greeted a Bridgeport reliever with a three-run home run that landed basically in the parking lot in left.
Honeywell, hitting one spot behind Brown in the order, got a pitch she could drive and deposited it deep into the afternoon for a solo home run.
Earlier in the frame, Abby Gorrell had doubled home a run and Mary Smith drove in a tally with a base hit.
That was more than enough run support for Arianna Saxton, who was brilliant in the circle. She struck out 12 and didn’t issue a walk. She did plunk a hitter twice and she scored both times. She also allowed two hits.
“It was a good day for our pitching, and I am really proud of the girls,” Gorrell said. “This was a good effort and our bates finally woke up and we got going when we had to.”
With Saxton dealing in the circle, Shadyside added three more insurance runs in the sixth. She helped her own cause with a RBI double. Gorrell tripled her home and then two hitters later Fulton, who had three hits in the game, drove in her second run.
“Shadyside started to Hanna (Brewer), so we had to make a change, and I’ll take some of the blame for some of the pitches I called,” Bridgeport head coach Tim Smith said. “I give credit to Shadyside’s hitting. I give our kids credit for hanging in there and giving everything they had, but we just didn’t have enough offensively.”
Bridgeport (2-5) used its speed to create its first run. Hanna Brewer was hit in the foot by a pitch and proceeded to steal second, third and then executed a beautiful delayed steal of home. All told, Brewer stole four bases in the game.
Shadyside, which plays host to Monroe Central today, is now 10-2 on the season. Bridgeport will pay East Liverpool a visit.
