Area thinclads advance

BYESVILLE -- Several area Division II track and field athletes have punched their ticket to the regional meet next weekend at Muskingum University.

The athletes earned that by qualifying at Wednesday's Division II district at Meadowbrook High School.

Martins Ferry's 4×8 team won the district championship with a time of 10:21.70.

St. Clairsville's freshman pole vaulting duo of Ava Crum and Ava Borkoski each cleared 9-feet to finish third and fourth, respectively.

Buckeye Local's Pam Kandrach advanced via a bronze medal in the shot put with a toss of 37-6.

On the boys' side, the area led the way in the discus.

Union Local's Johnny Sabinski won the discus title with a mark of 169-4 and St. Clairsville's Perry Patrone was second with a twirl of 158-9.

The area also dominated the pole vault competition.

St. Clairsville senior Karl Kain won the event with a 13-foot clearance. Barnesville junior Gideon Hulbert finished second and also cleared 13-feet.

St. Clairsville's Kyle Stoner was third at 13-feet.

The Red Devils picked up another win in the lone jump thanks to senior Grant Swider, who marked the sand at 22-3. Stoner finished fourth with a mark of 20-8 1/2.

St. C. also was the top finisher in the 4×8 with a time of 8:21.35.

Barnesville finished second with a time of 8:25.43.
