OVAC track qualifying wraps up

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — The field is set. It’s officially time to crown to Ohio Valley Athletic Conference champions in the sport of track and field.
The final pieces of the puzzle were put in place for Saturday’s annual OVAC Cal Giffin Track and Field Championship Meet under much warmer and brighter conditions at Red Devil Stadium Thursday evening.
The Class 1A/2A and 3A schools, which were scheduled to qualify on Monday held their qualifying round.
GIRLS
Class 1A/2A
Shadyside had a strong day of qualifying.
Senior Kierstyn Elerick was impressive. She paced the high hurdles in a solid 16.79.
Senior Kenzy Beckett, who is enjoying a strong season, led the field in the 1600 meter run with a 5:26.31. She came back to pace the 800 in 2:29.64.
In the field, Shadyside’s Kaci Tsoras led the pole vault at 7-feet.
The Tigers’ shuttle team paced the field with a time of 1:12.25.
The Tigers led the 4×1 field with a time of 54.56.
Steubenville Catholic, which figures to be right in the mix for another team title on Saturday, also had an impressive day of competition.
The Crusaders got their day going by posting the top time in the 4×8 with a 10:42.16.
Their strength in the relays continued when they paced the 4×2 with a time of 1:53.93. They were the top seed by 23 seconds in the 4×4 with a time of 4:23.34.
Individually, senior Theresa Kerker led the field in the low hurdles with a time of 50.11.
Monroe Central’s Mayzie Emery advanced as the top qualifier in the 100 with a time of 13.37. She later added the top spot in the 200 meter dash with a time of 28.06.
River’s Chloe Honeycutt was the top mark in the long jump with a mark of 15-1 1/4.
Wheeling Central freshman Alexa Loy was the top qualifier in the high jump with a mark of 4-6.
Hundred’s Leah Delaney led the shot put field with a mark of 31-1.
Class 3A
Linsly enjoyed a solid evening of work.
Freshman Kayleigh Whittington continued her impressive rookie season. She turned in a 13.04 to lead the way in the 100.
The Cadets posted a 53.81, which was the top time in the 4×100 field.
Barnesville posted a time of 1:53.63 to lead the way in the 4×2. The Shamrocks led the 4×4 in 4:20.38.
Senior Aubrey Johnson paced the 3200 meter run with a time of 12:46.54.
Magnolia set the pace in the shuttles with a time of 1:13.82.
Junior Jenna Blain was the top qualifier in the high hurdles with a time of 16.25. She added the top seed in the lows with a time of 48.56. She made it a trifecta with the top mark in the 200 with a time of 27.12.
In the long jump, sophomore Sienna McKeever prevailed with a mark of 15-10.
Martins Ferry turned in a 10:38.24 to pace the 4×800 qualifying.
The Purple Riders watched freshman Alanna Williams run a 2:29.34 to lead the way in the 800.
Bellaire freshman Alyson Vingia posted an impressive mark of 125-6 to pace the discus.
Union Local’s Sydney McFarland was among the top qualifiers with a 7-foot jump.
BOYS
Class 1A/2A
Two-time defending champion Shadyside and Wheeling Central both had strong afternoons of qualifying and appear to be ready for an 18-event battle on Saturday.
The Tigers got things rolling with an OVAC Class record in the shuttles when the team of Nathan Booth, Kaiden Baker, Kooper Chimley and Dylan Booth turned in a 59.71, which was nearly three seconds better than the previous mark, which was set in 2014.
Chimley set the pace, individually, in the in the 400 with a time of 51.22.
Shadyside ran a 3:36.53 to pace the 4×4.
In the field, Shadyside’s Elijah Brock was one of three to soar over 5-4 to pace the field.
Tigers pole vault duo of Isaiah Filburn and Ean Weatherson were two of the three vaulters to clear 9-feet.
The Maroon Knights answered by setting the pace in the 4×8 with a time of 9:13.01.
Senior speedster Lorenzo Ferrera set an OVAC Class 1A/2A record when he blazed down the track to an 11.02, which was three hundredths of a second better than the previous mark. He later paced the 200 with a 22.90.
The Knights then paced the 4×2 with a 1:33.31. They then posted a 45.08 to pace the 4×1.
Junior Aidan Scott was impressive in the distance races. He turned in a 4:40.00 to pace the 1600 meter run. He turned in a 10:14.93 to lead the way in the 3200.
Toronto’s Zane Kinsey was the top qualifier in the long jump, marking the sand at 20-9 3/4
Class 3A
It looks like Linsly and Barnesville are set to wage an 18-event showdown on Saturday after both had strong days of qualifying.
The Cadets set the pace in six events.
Senior speedster JyLeik Johnson posted an 11-flat to lead the way in the 100 meter dash. He also posted a 51.23 to set the pace in the 400. He capped his day with a 22.33 to lead the way in the 200.
Linsly got things going with a time of 1:02.28 to lead the shuttle field. The Cadets 4×1 team turned in a 43.46 to lead the way.
Freshman Ramello Derr led the long jump with a mark of 20-9.
The Shamrocks led the way in the 4×8 with a time of 8:39.46.
Senior standout Cooper Bell led the way in the high hurdles with a solid 15.34. He also paced the high jump at 5-8.
Sophomore Conner Starr was the top qualifier in the 1600 with a 4:47.10.
Senior Julian Becerra ran two laps in 2:07.09 to pace the 800.
Barnesville was the top qualifier in the 4×4 with a time of 3:34.29.
Union Local’s Johnny Sabinski set the bar in both the shot put and discus. He launched the platter to a mark of 166-11. He then shifted to the shot put circle and launched the iron ball to a mark of 58-5 1/2.
Martins Ferry’s Carter Bennett was the top qualifier in the pole vault at 11-feet.
