PREP ROUNDUP: Barnesville softball falls; HC wins in baseball
STEUBENVILLE — Edison will play for the Division III Eastern District championship after it blanked Barnesville, 5-0, at the new Steubenville on Monday.
Katie Fluharty was dominant in the circle with 13 strikeouts. She allowed just five hits and the Wildcats didn’t commit an error.
Pressly Meadows had two singles and a RBI, while Morgan Martin and Grace Browning each drove in a run with a single.
Barnesville (16-10) received a double and a single from Ellie Thompson.
Edison is 17-13 and will take on Meadowbrook at Harrison.
BASEBALL
Division III
Harrison Central 1, Ridgewood 0
CADIZ — The Huskies were eliminated in the district title game last season at the hands of the Generals, but returned the favor Monday afternoon, advancing with a 1-0 victory.
Tucker Snyder was driven home in the bottom of the second on a sacrifice fly by Braden Cook and the Huskies made that run stand up.
Wyatt Pierce got the mound win with four strikeouts. Kaden Jurosko worked the seventh for the save.
Garaway 7, Union Local 3
SUGARCREEK — The Pirates scored the first six runs of the game and went on to pick up the victory against the Jets Monday in a Division III tourney game.
Union Local was led at the plate by Logan Hess, who had a double, single and two RBI.
The Jets finished with an 11-16 record.
Division IV
Frontier 2, River 0
HANNIBAL — Frontier got just enough offense to support its brilliant pitching and thus took out River Monday in a Division IV sectional tournament opener at Rick Bonar Field.
The Cougars Noah West was brilliant on the mound. He fanned five and walked just three, while scattering only three singles. He also had a single and RBI.
The Pilots finish at 13-12.
Conotton 10, Shadyside 0
BOWERSTOWN — Shadyside’s late-season swoon continued Monday evening when the Tigers were eliminated by Conotton Valley in five innings of a Division IV sectional.
The Tigers were limited to four hits and couldn’t overcome three errors and five walks.
Shadyside’s hits were all singles scattered among four players.
Toronto 17, Bridgeport 2
TORONTO — The Bulldogs saw their season come to a close Monday at the hands of now 21-6 Toronto.
Bridgeport received a single and RBI from Gary Widmor.
Toronto was led by Dom Bouscher’s home run, double, single and five RBI.
Monroe 2, Steubenville CC 0
STEUBENVILLE — Monroe Central’s Jake Winland was absolutely brilliant on the mound and the Seminoles went to Vacarro Field and stunned the second-seeded Crusaders Monday.
Winland struck out 12 and allowed just two hits in the game.
Offensively, the Seminoles (8-15) received a double and single from Westin Swallow, while Lane Demchak had a single and RBI. Carter Knowlton had a triple and single. Xavier Kinney drove in a run with a single.
Division II
Buckeye Local 5, Claymont 4
CONNORVILLE — Buckeye Local got off the deck and scored three runs in the last of the seventh to get past Claymont in an opening-round Division II tournament game at Bill Mazeroski Field.
Jacob Berry worked the seventh and recorded three strikeouts and then watched his offense earn him a pitching win.
Michael Griffin had two hits, while Haydn Boyce had a and RBI. Jesse Meddles and Kaleb Stang also had a RBI.
The Panthers, now 9-15, are back in action today at St. Clairsville with a berth in the district on the line.
TRACK & FIELD
NEWCOMERSTOWN — A handful of area Division III athletes have assured themselves a spot in next week’s regional championship meet at Heath and plenty more put themselves on the brink during the opening night of the track postseason at Lee Stadium.
Shadyside freshman Kaci Tsoras won the district championship in the pole vault by soaring over 9-6.
Bellaire, which dropped down to Division III this spring, saw junior Dalton Smelko advance in the discus with a mark of 128-1, which was good enough for third place.
Martins Ferry junior Carter Bennett finished second in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-6.
Shadyside’s Grant Miller was third in the pole vault with an 11-6 clearance.
