Barnesville’s Allen set to guide Ohio
Barnesville’s Blake Allen could barely control his emotions when told he would be coaching the Ohio All Stars in the annual OVAC All-Star Football Game tonight at Wheeling Island Stadium.
“I am very excited and humbled to have the opportunity to coach the OVAC Game,” he said. “My entire staff is looking forward to it.”
Joining Allen on the Ohio coaching staff are members of his Shamrocks staff: Bryce Allen, D.J. Butler, Chris Hannahs, Dylan Rogers, Steven Shumaker, Anthony Starr, Brady Treherne and Neal Zaccagnini.
The following is a capsule look at the Ohio coaching staff:
BLAKE ALLEN – Allen has been the head coach of the Shamrocks for the past six seasons after a two-year stint as an assistant at his alma mater. He was named the 2022 Ohio Division V Eastern District Coach of the Year, the 2021 Ohio Division VI Eastern District Coach of the Year, and the 2020 OVAC Class 3A Coach of the Year.
A graduate of Muskingum University where he played football and served as a team captain his senior year, Allen and his wife, Carissa, have three children, Campbell (9), Carter (7) and Chandler (1).
BRYCE ALLEN – Bryce is the brother of the head coach and has served as an assistant coach at his alma mater in 10 of his 13 years of coaching. He was named the WTOV 9 Defensive Assistant Coach of the Year in 2022. He is a 2004 Barnesville graduate and attended Waynesburg and Muskingum universities. Bryce and his wife, Ashli, have one daughter, Alexis.
D.J. BUTLER – Butler has served as an assistant football coach for a quarter of a century, with stops at Cadiz and Harrison Central. He is also the Shamrocks head baseball coach and led them to the 2021 Ohio Division III state semifinals. He and his wife, Kelly, have two daughters, Brittany and Natalie.
CHRIS HANNAHS – Hannahs has been a mainstay along the Shamrocks sidelines while his three sons played football. He has been with Barnesville for 15 years. A former Shamrock, he attended Ohio University. He and his wife, Rachel, are the parents of Auston, Cade and C.J.
DYLAN ROGERS – Another Barnesville grad, Rogers has been on the Shanrocks staff for 14 years. He attended Wheeling Jesuit University. He and his wife, Denise, have a daughter, Ensley, and a stepson, Bryce Castle.
STEVEN SHUMAKER – Shumaker is a 2007 OVAC All-Star game participant as a Shamrock. He has been an assistant at his alma mater for eight years. He attended Washington & Jefferson College. He and his wife, Mariah, have three children, Lydia, Annie and Marlo.
ANTHONY STARR – Starr has been coaching football for 13 years, 11 at Barnesville. He has also coached at Cambridge and attended Ohio and Muskingum universities. He and his wife, Julie, have three children, Alexis, Abigail and Olivia.
BRADY TREHERNE – A former Barnesville standout, Treherne attended Marietta College where he served as a student assistant in the OVAC All-Star Game. He has been coaching at Barnesville for six years and is also a baseball assistant coach.
NEAL ZACCAGNINI – Zaccagnini is the newest member of the Barnesville staff as he came on board in 2022 after six years at St. John Central and four years at Buckeye Local. He is a St. John Central alum and attended Ohio University and West Liberty. He is married to Tricia Zaccagnini.
