Brooke High School girls makes a splash at the Brooke Winter Invitational

WELLSBURG — Despite only having two champions, the Brooke girls swim team had enough depth to splash away from the 10-team field at the Brooke Winter Invitational Wednesday inside the Wellness Center at Brooke High School.

The Bruins amassed 126 points to easily beat Parkersburg South’s 78. John Marshall was third with 63 and Wheeling Park finished fourth with 48.

Brooke’s Lyla Horvath won the 500 Freestyle and also swam a leg on the winning 200 Freestyle Relay that also included Ella Dietrich, Ella McCullough and Faith Farrell.

John Marshall’s Maitlyn MIller was a double winner in the 200 Freestyle and the 50 Freestyle.

Wheeling Park’s Molly George won the 100 Backstroke.

On the boys side, Parkersburg South defeated Wheeling Park 152 to 120 in the 8-team.

Brooke was third at 66 and Beaver Local fourth at 32.

The Patriots did have a double winner in Levi Parker who claimed the 200 Freestyle and the 500 Freestyle. Jackson Kizminski won the 200 IM and swam a leg on the first-place 200 Freestyle Relay team that also featured Malachi Smith, Nathan LaMagna and Brody Bowie.

LaMagna touched the wall dirt in the 100 Butterfly.

John Marshall’s Wyatt Jefferson won the 200 Breaststroke.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Wheeling Central 71, Armstrong 62

OAKLAND, MD — The Maroon Knights put forth a balanced scoring attack Wednesday evening to post its sixth win in a row to open the season in the semifinals of the Snowball Classic at Southern Garrett High School.

Wheeling Central was fueled by four double-figure scorers. Leading the way was junior Troy Anthony, who had 17.

Eli Sancomb and Quinton Burlenski each had 16, while Jeremy Ratcliffe added 15.

Bridgeport 51, Conotton Valley 47

BRIDGEPORT — Jaleel Vincent dropped in 22 points and the Bulldogs held off the Rockets on Frank Baxter Court inside John J. Havlicek Gymnasium.

J Gear added 11 for the hosts.

Frontier 56, Beallsville 41

BEALLSVILLE — The visiting Cougars received 32 points from Avery Powell and 11 from Ethan Snyder in topping the Blue Devils.

Logan Taylor led Beallsville with 18.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Union Local 65, S. Clairsville 11

ST. CLSIRSVILLE — Laken Vinskovich scored 20 points and Lauren Miller added 18 as the Jets flew past the hosts Red Devils.

Parkersburg 67, River 55

MARIETT.A — Kelsey Harlan recorded her third straight 30-plus outing but it wasn’t enough as the Pilots fell on the road.

The senior pumped in 34. Reese Hobbs added eight.
