Indian Creek take down the Harrison Central Huskies

CADIZ–Indian Creek’s scoring combo of Kylie Anderson and McKenna Scott combined for 30 points in the Redskins 61-35 victory against homestanding Harrison Central.

Those numbers took a bit to build, however, as Creek got away from its inside-out offensive philosophy. That, coupled with a few missed layups and short jumpers, necessitated Creek head coach Steve Eft talking about getting back on track in the second half.

“We missed a couple of easy ones early and we were a little 3 (pointer) happy in the first half,” Eft said as his team improved to 5-1 with a home date vs. St. Clairsville looming on Thursday. “We weren’t shooting inside out and after we adjusted at the half and talked about what we needed to do, we played a much better half.”

Harrison came out determined to give the experienced visiting team a game, crashing the boards and working to beat Creek’s pressure early.

Maddie Sedgmer grabbed her own miss, stuck the putback and completed the conventional 3-point play to give Harrison a brief lead, 7-6, in the first quarter.

The Huskies kept it within striking distance until midway through the second quarter.

It wasn’t a win, but head coach Chase Smith noted his encouragement after the team’s rough start to the season against a tough slate.

“They are a really good team with a lot of experience and I was very proud in the first half,” Smith said. “We’ve had a rough start and had a conversation about getting back to the basics, and in the first half, we set some goals of playing four minutes at a time and controlling what we can control and I thought we did that.”

As Creek gravitated back toward its bread and butter, Scott began attacking the basket off the dribble, finding success against whichever defense Harrison threw at her.

If she wasn’t knifing through the line, she was dumping the ball low to Anderson.

“McKenna Scott, she is a player,” Smith said. “They drove on our zone, drove on our man, and once she was able to drive, they were able to dump it down.”

Eft was pleased with the team’s defensive effort, especially during a decisive third quarter that saw the visitors outscore the Huskies 18-2.

Turnovers led to easy buckets and Creek opened the half on a 10-0 run before a Sedgmer bucket momentarily stopped the bleeding.

“We backed our zone up a bit and were able to get some better ball pressure, which led to run outs and easy baskets,” Eft said. “Overall, I’m happy with our effort and to get out of here with a win.”

Tori Robertson backed her teammates with eight points for Creek.

Danica Rensi led the Huskies with 13 points. Sedgmer added seven and Kennedy Dunlap and Angi Ferri evenly split 12 points.
