Bellaire Big Reds fall to St. Clairsville boys in opening season game

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — St. Clairsville made a successful debut in high school baseball action Monday on the Memorial Park diamond with a 13-1 triumph over Bellaire (0-3) in a game halted after four-and-a-half innings due to the OHSAA mercy rule.

Senior Caleb Keenan was a two-way thorn in the Big Reds’ side as he struck out seven, didn’t walk a batter and scattered five hits in going the distance. He also singled twice and knocked in a pair of runs.

Brody Saunders singled and homered to collect two ribbies, while Marcus Bush had a pair of RBI with a single and double and Mikey Balgo singled in two. Braylen Blomquist tripled in a run; Easton Conaway had a run-scoring double and Colten Florence plated a run with a single.

Luke Heatherington hit a solo homer in the fourth for Bellaire’s lone tally. Chickie LaMotte had two singles.

St. Clairsville hosts Dover today.

Linsly 4, Madonna 3

WHEELING — The Cadets scored three times in the bottom of the fourth and reliever Dillon Wilson made the runs stand up in a close decision over the visiting Blue Dons on Holloway Field.

Wilson, the third Linsly hurler, picked up the win with five Ks and a trio of walks. He also had a double.

Carson Gessler singled twice to plate two runs for Linsly.

Grant Wilharm singled, doubled and drove in a run for Madonna. Kolten Grishkevich doubled.

John Marshall 7, Warren Local 3

VINCENT –The visiting Monarchs (6-2) scored four times in the top of the third to take a 5-0 lead and never looked back.

Matt Markonich doubled in two runs for John Marshall. Winning pitcher Hayden Hughes singled three times and Isaac Koontz drove in a run with a single. Hughes also fanned eight to pick up the mound win with relief help from Hayden Knapp and Koontz.

Paden City 8, Bridgeport 2

BROOKSIDE — Joey Baker struck out 11 and walked one while scattering four hits as the Wildcats (4-4) evened their record with a win on the Niekro Diamond.

Bryson Stackpole drove in three runs with a single and triple for Paden City. Kayden Myers had a two-run double and Brayden Neff singled, doubled and drove in a run. Jeremiah Thomas singled twice and plated a run.

Danny Goff singled twice and doubled for the Bulldogs. Zac DiLoretta had a run-scoring double. Avery Jackson had the other RBI.

Monroe Central 2, Shadyside 1

WOODSFIELD — The Seminoles walked off with a win at home Monday against the Tigers.

A one-out run in the bottom of the seventh ended what had been a pitchers duel to that point, Shadyside’s Luke Crozier pitching six and one-third innings allowing two runs on eight hits and one walk, while Monroe Central’s Lane Demcheck pitched all seven innings, allowing five hits and issuing one walk.

Carter Knowlton hit a home run and a double for Monroe Central, driving in both of the ‘Noles runs. Wyatt Parr drove in the Tigers’ lone run.

SOFTBALL

Wheeling Central 8, Shenandoah 0

ELM GROVE — Josie Frizzell fired a one-hitter and struck out 12 while walking one as the Maroon Knights (4-0) cruised past the Zeps on Ben’s Field at the J.B. Chambers I-470 Sports Complex.

Bella Rine collected a trio of one-base raps. Maddie Miehle singled and tripled. Trina Baker singled and doubled.

Bellaire 5, St. Clairsville 0

ST. JOE — Rylie Porter allowed one hit and fanned eight in a complete game win for the Big Reds over the Red Devils on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Emilee Menendez tripled home two runs for Bellaire. Porter drove in one with a single and double and Calleigh Holt singled twice. Allie Ault had a run-producing double.
