Belmont native wins state-wide championship

YOUNGSTOWN — A Belmont native came home with some gold from a journey north this past weekend.

12-year-old Calen Saksa won a state-wide championship on Sunday, going through five matches to come out on top of the bracket in the Ohio Athletic Committee Grade School state tournament.

Saksa, who goes to River Elementary, took the title in the 130-pound weight class. The OAC tournament took place at the Covelli Centre in Youngstown this past weekend, the finals taking place on Sunday.

Saksa wrestles for the Wrestling Mill in Belmont, Ohio for coach James Lewis. Saksa recorded three pins and a major decision before winning the title in a 9-2 decision.
