WHEELING -- The Wheeling University Cardinals fell in the first round of the MEC Tournament in an overtime nail-biter against Notre Dame College, 100-98.
The Cardinals entered the conference tournament as the No. 9 seed while the Falcons came in as the No. 8 seed.
Wheeling led 98-97 going into the final minute of overtime, but Notre Dame's RJ Ogom collected an offensive rebound putback to leapfrog the Cardinals and lead 99-98 with 21 seconds to play. The Falcons' Gbolahan Adio came away with a block on defense, and was fouled with four seconds to go. Adio made one of two, and the last second 3-point attempt by the Cardinals was off as the buzzer sounded.
Adio scored 20 points for Notre Dame, while Andre Harris scored 30 points with eight rebounds.
For Wheeling, Sean Ealy and All-MEC First-Team honoree Marcus Johnson each scored 24 points, Ealy pulling down six rebounds while Johnson pulled down eight.
Alex Smith scored 13, Tee Harris scored 12 and S.J. Hutchinson scored 10 for the Cardinals.
Wheeling out-rebounded Notre Dame 42-37, but Notre Dame shot a scalding 54.7% from the field and 45.8% from deep, making 11 3's.
Wheeling shot 47.8% and 37% on their 3-pointers, making 10.
The Falcons outscored the Cardinals in the paint 46-34, on the fastbreak 14-4, and registered 13 assists to Wheeling's 8.
Wheeling led 52-48 at halftime, and the two teams were tied 86-86 at the end of regulation.
Notre Dame will play No. 1 seed Charleston on Thursday at 6 p.m. No. 2 West Liberty will play No. 7 Glenville State in the preceding game at 2:30 p.m.
Glenville State 95, Frostburg State 59
WHEELING – The Glenville State Men's Basketball team blew out 10th seeded Frostburg State tonight in the opening round of the MEC Tournament. The Pioneers shot 46% from the field, knocked down 13 three-pointers and outrebounded the Bobcats 64-31.
GSU began to create separation as the under 5-minute media timeout neared, leading 33-21. A strong close to the half allowed the Pioneers to boost their lead to 19 (44-25) going into the locker room.
The momentum that the blue and white built at the end of the 1st half carried into the second half, growing the advantage to 63-32 with 13:15 remaining in the game.
Five Pioneers reached double figures, led by Jordan Turbo Smith and Devin Collins pouring in 17 points each. Smith added 12 assists to finish with a double-double while Collins just missed out on a double-double, grabbing nine boards. James Franklin finished with 12 points, followed by Dominiq Penn (11 points) and Jaelin Johnson (10 points).
