Martins Ferry girls ground Union Local Jets

MORRISTOWN — Martins Ferry’s Giana Chirpas had a game to remember on Monday.

The Purple Riders freshman singled twice, doubled, tripled twice and homered to drive in an eye-popping nine RBI to lead the visitors (12-4) to a 19-4 high school softball win over Union Local.

After recording just two hits in last Saturday’s loss to Wheeling Central in the OVAC Tom Bechtel Class 3A championship game, Martins Ferry recorded 23 safeties against the Jets, led by Chirpas’s 6-for-6 effort. Abby Snedeker added three singles and a double that produced three runs. Averie Hughes knocked in two runs with a pair of singles, while winning pitcher Maddie Lucas singled, tripled and drove in one. Laci Zinn singled, doubled and knocked in a run.

Lucas fanned eight, didn’t walk a batter and scattered four hits.

Martins Ferry scored 11 runs in the top of the seventh.

Myah Martin doubled in a run for Union Local. Alli Kellaway also doubled.

Beaver Local 6, Bellaire 5

ST. JOE — The visiting Beavers scored twice in the sixth and two more times in the seventh to rally past the Big Reds on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Sidney Rowson doubled twice to drive in a pair of runs for Bellaire. Emilee Menendez singled in two more and Majestique Jackson slugged a solo home run.

River 3, Frontier 0

Frontier 13, River 10

SARDIS — The visiting Cougars (15-3) and Pilots (9-9) split a doubleheader as River’s Ava Wohnhas threw a no-hitter in the opener, fanning nine and walking none. A Pilots’ error cost her a perfect game. She also singled and homered.

Pressly Kilburn singled thrice and drove in a run, while Tessa Prim singled in a run.

In the nightcap, the Cougars scored eight times in the second and held off the Pilots who tallied five in their last at-bat.

Reese Hobbs drove in three runs for River with two doubles. Kilburn singled twice, doubled and drove in a pair of runs.

Monroe Central 10, Shenandoah 2

WOODSFIELD — The host Seminoles tallied eight runs in the bottom of the third to run away from the Zeps.

Maclarin Craft drove in three runs with a single and triple. Jadyn Miller knocked in two runs with a single and triple. Juana McElroy singled twice to plate a run.

Kazziah Cecil fanned eight and walked one.

Magnolia 15, Paden City 2

NEW MARTINSVILLE — The Blue Eagles scored a decisive victory over the Wildcats on Monday.

Mallory McDiffitt pitched the entirety of the abbreviated five-inning game for Magnolia, striking out five in earning a win. She also knocked an RBI at the plate.

Alyssa Littleton led the Blue Eagles with four RBI, tallying a pair of hits including a double.

Madeline Delaney and Sienna McKeever also each had two hits and two RBI.

Paden City leadoff hitter Lexi Mathis had two RBI.

BASEBALL

Cameron 8, Paden City 4

CAMERON — The second-seeded Dragons (18-7) tallied seven runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to erase a 4-1 deficit against the visiting Wildcats in an OVAC Class A semifinal. Cameron is seeking its third straight crown.

Preston Hartley earned the win in relief. The freshman struck out 12 and walked one. He gave up two hits and also singled twice himself.

Zayde Long singled three times and Colson Wichterman had two singles and a pair of RBI.

Joey Baker and Kayden Myers each singled twice, with Myers recording an RBI.

Tyler Consolidated 10, Ravenswood 0

KIDWELL –The host Silver Knights (17-10) banged out 17 hits in their rout of the Red Devils.

Owen Westbrook and Tyler Ferrell each singled three times, with Ferrell driving in three and Westbrook two. Gabe Jackson knocked in a pair with a single and double, while Ethan Clark doubled, tripled and plated a run.

Reese Davis picked up the mound win with seven strikeouts and two walks in four innings.

Tyler Consolidated hosts Cameron today.

Union Local 6, Monroe

Central 1

WOODSFIELD — Jake Toohey’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run top of the third as the Jets flew past the host Seminoles.

Logan Hess also homered, in addition to a single, and drove in three runs.

Winning pitcher Billy Schumacher singled twice and fanned four without issuing a free pass. He surrendered four singles, with Max Demchak recording half of them. Mason Landefeld had an RBI.

Jefferson County Christian 11, Pittsburgh Christian Academy 5

MINGO JUNCTION — The Royals bashed their way past Pittsburgh Christian Academy on Monday. Lee Gump got the win on the mound, pitching five innings and striking out four. Rob Henderson closed the door with four K’s in a scoreless seventh.

At the plate, Ben Adams was 3-4 with a double, three RBI, and collected his 100th career hit. Gump had three hits and scored three runs. Wyatt Hervey, Noah Kostelny and Jake Freeman each had two hits.

The Royals move to 11-6 on the season

River 7, Frontier 0

HANNIBAL — Hunter Nething drove in three runs, Peyton Blue pitched a complete game shutout and the Pilots topped the Cougars on Monday evening.

Blue allowed just a pair of singles while striking out six in picking up the win.

Nething notched a double to go with his trio of ribbies, Lucas Dennis also hitting a double.

Cody Simon stole three bases and knocked three base hits. Carson Makris picked up an RBI.
