Martins Ferry takes down visiting UL, 8-4

MARTINS FERRY — Trailing 4-0 entering the bottom of the fifth inning, Martins Ferry (3-1) struck for six runs and never looked back in doubling up visiting Union Local, 8-4, in high school softball action.

Freshmen Maddie Lucas and Giana Chirpas sparked the uprising with key hits. Lucas finished with two singles and a double that produced three runs. Chirpas doubled twice to knock in a pair. Samantha Goodard added a run-scoring triple and Abby Snedeker had an RBI single.

Lucas picked up the win in relief of Snedeker. Lucas fanned three, walked three and didn’t allow a hit. Snedeker struck out four but walked five.

Hallee McGarry and Alli Kellaway had solo home runs for the Jets. Laken Vinskovich delivered a run-scoring double.

Buckeye Trail 5, Shadyside 4

LORE CITY — The Tigers out-hit the Warriors on Monday but were sunk by six errors in a road loss.

Shadyside tallied 10 hits, led by three off the bat of Jaelyn Greenwood, who came around to score twice and doubled.

Maggie Zdunczyk tallied two RBI.

Buckeye Trail was led by Morgan Watson, who had two of the Warriors’ seven hits, including a double, and drove in two.

Barnesville 14, Shenandoah 0

BARNESVILLE — The Shamrocks had little trouble against the Zeps on Monday, pouring on the runs in a 4.5-inning mercy rule win.

Ellie Thompson starred for the ‘Rocks, belting a home run and a triple to drive in five runners and score thrice herself.

Abigail Johnson, Emmy Gibbons, Maddy Tyson and Chloe Smolira also tallied RBI.

Freshman Ella Betts tallied five strikeouts in the win.

Wheeling Park 8, Steubenville 5

WHEELING — The Patriots’ Delaney Randolph fueled her team to a victory Monday, driving in three runs at the plate and pitching a complete game in the circle against the Big Red.

Bryn Ernest and Rylie Braunlich each had a double and each drove in a run for Park. Abbie Harmon tallied two hits, an RBI and two stolen bases.

Steubenville scored five runs, but only one went down as an earned run on Randolph’s stat line.

Big Red’s Sena Smith finished with three RBI and a double, while teammate Sadie Edwards also recorded a two-bagger. The two shared pitching duties Monday, Smith saddled with the loss.

Bridgeport 8, Beallsville 3

BRIDGEPORT — The Bulldogs snapped a losing streak as Vanessa Mullen struck out 11 in tossing a three-hitter at the Blue Devils on Irene Ehni Field. She also singled twice and homered to drive in three runs.

Rya Risdon had a two-run single.

Caldwell 11, Bellaire 0

Caldwell 13, Bellaire 11

ST. JOE — The visiting Redskins earned a sweep of the Big Reds on the Bellaire Middle School diamond.

Maddie Mumaw picked up the win in both games, striking out eight in each contest. She also drove in five runs in the first game and one in the second.

Bellaire’s Addyson Kovach slugged a grand slam in the bottom of the seventh of the second game. She finished with five RBI.

Ally Ault plated three with a single and double, while Majestique Jackson singled twice and recorded a pair of ribbies.

BASEBALL

Edison 7, Buckeye Local 5

RICHMOND — The Edison Wildcats popped five runs in the third and held on in the seventh to leave their home field with a victory over Buckeye Local.

The Wildcats scored one in the bottom of the first inning, and came through for five in the bottom of the third for a 6-1 lead. Ahead 7-2 going into the seventh, the Panthers scored three runs in short order, prompting Cole Pittman to enter the game on the mound with one out on the board. Pittman allowed just one further hit before ending the game for Edison.

Gavyn Romanyak and Jacob Berry each hit doubles for Buckeye Local, Romanyak driving in two runs on a three-hit day while Berry tallied one RBI. Right fielder Mason Griffin had two hits and two RBI for the Panthers.

Kyle Long finished with two hits and two runs scored for Edison, including a triple. Bryce Rogers had two runs batted in.

University 10, Linsly 2

WHEELING — The Cadets played six innings neck-and-neck with the Hawks, but an eight-run second inning for University was more than enough to secure a win for the visitors.

Linsly committed three errors in the game, and only one of the Hawks’ eight runs in the second frame was earned.

University made two errors of their own, but none were consequential.

Three-hole Andrew Skadra had a sterling day at the plate for Linsly with a double, a triple and an RBI.

Nathaniel Berhalter had two hits and a swipe for Linsly.

Max Cash and Brodee Latocha each drove in two for the Hawks.

Parkersburg South 4, John Marshall 2

GLEN DALE — The Patriots rallied from a 2-1 deficit after two innings to double up the host Monarchs. They scored twice in the fifth and once in the sixth.

Tommy Clegg slugged an RBI double for JM.

River 5, Shadyside 4

SHADYSIDE — The Pilots won a close matchup Monday on the road against the Tigers.

River scored three runs in the top of the fifth to go ahead 5-3, and though Shadyside scratched across one run in the bottom of the seventh, they couldn’t knot the score.

Kaden Hunt picked up the win in his start for the Pilots, and Carson Makris slammed the door in three innings of relief.

Peyton Blue had a triple, two steals and an RBI for the Pilots. Makris also had a triple, while Lucas Dennis knocked a double from the leadoff spot. Colton Cisar and Cale Willis each drove in a runner.

Jacob Allen had a triple and three RBI for Shadyside. Cole Micker hit a double.

St. Clairsville 9, Indian Creek 5

ST. CLAIRSVILLE — Trailing 3-2 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Red Devils (6-0) tallied six runs in the inning and never looked back in handing the Redskins their first loss.

Braylen Blomquist and Marcus Bush each delivered a two-run single in the eruption. Winning pitcher Hunter Hoffman singled twice to knock in three runs. Caleb Keenan had a two-run single.

Hoffman fanned five and walked three. Mikey Balgo struck out two and walked one in an inning of work.
