St. C boys capture DII championship

BYESVILLE — St. Clairsville’s boys captured another Division II district track championship with a strong performance on day two of the district’s finale.

The John Glenn girls ran away with the team championship, while the Steubenville Big Red finished runner-up in both the boys and girls standings. St. C’s girls team finished right behind Big Red at No. 3.

The Red Devils’ Emma Henry won the Division I showdown between WVU signee Sabria Jones of Big Red and Marshall recruits Brynn McKeever of Buckeye Local and Henry herself.

She broke the 12 second barrier in the 100 finals, finishing in 11.92 to Jones’ 12.28 and McKeever’s 12.47.

In the 200, Henry shined again, clocking a 25.08 to Jones’ 25.68 and McKeever’s 25.77, as the trio finished 1-2-3 in both races.

McKeever finished second in the 400 along with Big Red’s Sarah Allen to advance to the regionals.

Jones did win gold, anchoring Big Red’s winning 4×100 team in a time of 49.92, ahead of St. C., Cambridge, and Barnesville. She also won the long jump at 18-10.75, as St. C’s. Ava Borksoki advanced in fourth along with Jones.

Martins Ferry’s Alanna Williams and Barnesville’s Marah Bethel went 1-2 in the 800 to qualify. The Rocks’ Makayla Vitale and Ferry’s Lakyn Call were 3-4 in the 1,600, while St. C.’s Luci Banks finished fourth in the 3,200.

Adrianna Crabtree finished runner-up in the 100 hurdles to Cambridge’s Zoey Caldwell, and fourth in the 300 hurdles, advancing in both as Caldwell claimed both hurdle championships.

Big Red and St. C. finished second and fourth in the 4×200, while Martins Ferry, Big Red, and Barnesville finished 2-through-4 in the 4×400.

Pam Kandrach captured the discus with a twirl of 135-06, while Big Red’s Bri Hudson advanced after finishing third at 121-07.

BOYS

Barnesville’s Aden Zumock clocked a 11.10 in the 100 to win, with Big Red’s Jalen Minniefield advancing after finishing fourth. Zumock doubled up in the 200, joined by Steubenville’s Ziare Scurry in the 200.

Scurry won the open 400, finishing in 50.03 ahead of Union Local’s Ayden Graham in third and Big Red’s Jemier Faulks in fourth.

Steubenville’s Josh Schoonover captured the 800 in 1:57.54, joined by the St. C. tandem of Brady Blacker and Tyler Harris in second and third, respectively.

Devils’ distance ace Ben Shields ran away with both the 1,600 and 3,200, finishing four laps in 4:20.43 and eight in 9:55.20, the only competitor to break 10 minutes.

Conner Starr of Barnesville and St. C.’s Sawyer Bonnett also advanced in the 1,600; the Red Devils’ Camden Judge and Big Red’s Owen Obrien in the 3,200.

Big Red’s Savior Faulks and Josiah Rea went 1st and 3rd in the 110 hurdles, while Faulks doubled up in the 300 intermediate hurdles, with Barnesville’s Eli Messenger advancing our of the fourth position. Faulks’ nearly eclipsed the 15 second mark in the 110s with a 15.01.

St. C. and Big Red finished 2nd and 4th in the 4×100, and 4th and 1st in the 4×200 as the Red claimed victory. The same held true in the 4×400, with Big Red winning and St. C. claiming fourth to advance.

Rea and Buckeye Local’s Isaac Hess advanced in the high jump, finishing third and fourth.

UL’s Johnny Sabinski continued his postseason tear, winning the shot with a put of 64-00.50, followed by St. C.’s Perry Patrone and Griffin Fogle in third and fourth, respectively.
