St. Clairsville out in front after day one of district track meet

BYESVILLE–The John Glenn girls and St. Clairsville boys grabbed the early, Day 1 lead at the Ohio Division II district track meet on a rainy night in Byesville.

Events were delayed at the Meadowbrook High School track complex because of the wet and stormy weather, delaying the start of action and pushing some of the distance events set to run qualifying heats into finals-only competition for Saturday.

With four events scored each, the Muskies jumped out to an early lead with 45 points while Cambridge (21), St. Clairsville (20.5), Buckeye Local (12.50), and Maysville (11) round out the top four.

On the boys’ side, the Red Devils picked up 30 points on Day 1, with John Glenn (22), Cambridge (21), and Barnesville (21) in a bottleneck race for second through fourth and Union Local right behind at fifth with 17.

Indian Creek’s boys 4×800 team advanced with a time of 9:23.90, good enough for fourth place in a race one by St. Clairsville (8:29.45). Buckeye Local finished 7th at 9:55.18.

Buckeye Local’s girls pushed a few competitors into the regional round as Brooke Kovalski hit a PR in the high jump at 4-8, edging Cambridge’s Audrina Gibson and St. Clairsville’s Brynlee Newton on jumps to claim the final qualifying spot.

Panthers’ throwing ace Pam Kandrach threw 36-8 in the shot put to finish third to advance while Big Red’s Sarah Ostovich’s 33-4 gave her a fifth place finish.

Union Local’s Johnny Sabinski easily won the discus with a 180-10 twirl, with St. Clairsville’s Perry Patrone and Dane Kinney were second and third, respectively, with Kinney PR’ing at 137-5 to overtake Barnesville’s Macguire Clouse, who finished fourth.

Big Red’s Sabron Felton just missed qualifying in the boys’ long jump as his 19-7 leap placed him fifth, three inches behind Meadowbrook’s Jamarcus Berger (10-10). Union Local’s Ayden Graham finished third at 20-5.75.

Cinjin Gibson of Cambridge won the boy’s pole vault, with Barnesville’s Eli Messenger (third, 11-6) and St. C.’s Gaetano Vcelka (4th, 11-0) advancing to the regionals.

The Red Devils’ Ava Crum came in second in girls’ pole vault at 10-0, while teammate Ava Borkoski just missed qualifying, finishing fifth at 9-6.

Qualifying for hurdles and sprint events were held with all remaining finals slated for Saturday afternoon at Meadowbrook.

The finals for the Division III track and field for the Eastern District take place today at Red Devil Stadium in St. Clairsville.
