Wheeling Central girls take down Madonna

WHEELING -- Josie Frizzell fired a no-hitter as Wheeling Central advanced to the championship game of the W.Va. Class A Section I softball tournament Thursday on Ben's Field at the J.B. Chambers I-40 Ballfields with a 1-0 decision over Madonna.

Frizzell struck out five and walked one.

Olivia Kiaski singled and doubled for the Maroon Knights (18-4) who will have to be beat twice by whoever comes out of the loser's bracket.

The lone run of the game was unearned.

John Marshall 5, Wheeling Park 4

GLEN DALE -- The Monarchs scored three runs in the bottom of the seventh with two outs to stun the Patriots in a W.Va. Class AAA Section I elimination game on Monarch Field.

Reese Ward had a single and two runs batted in for John Marshall, who will host Morgantown today, having to defeat the Mohigans twice in order to defend their sectional title.

Shelby Crow picked up the win in relief of AC Cumberlidge in the seventh.

Kaylee White slugged an RBI triple for the Monarchs. Nora Shock had a double and Carlee Yoho an RBI.

Abbie Harmon drove in three runs for Wheeling Park with a single and double. Faith Randolph had an RBI single. Bryn Ernest singled and doubled and Kate Kozlowski had two singles.

Barnesville 12, Fort Frye 5

BARNESVILLE -- The second inning proved fruitful for the Shamrocks against the Cadets on Thursday, the home team plating eight runs in the inning to vault them to a decisive victory.

Payton Dudzik homered and finished with three RBI for the 'Rocks, who also got a pair of RBI on a double by Lilly Welch, and two-hit days from Peyton Loudin, Maddy Schaffer and Kylee Powell.

Loudin and Ella Betts combined in the circle for the victory, Betts picking up the win and pitching the final four frames.

Barnesville had 10 hits as a team, and were helped by 10 Fort Frye errors.

BASEBALL

Jefferson County Christian 17 Tuscarawas Catholic 5

NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Jefferson County Christian breezed by the home standing Saints on Thursday. Rob Henderson threw a complete game win for the Royals.

On offense Carson Duvall tripled and singled, Jake Freeman Doubled and Lee Gump singled twice. The Royals move to 12-6-1.

St. Clairsville 8, Barnesville 1

BARNESVILLE -- The Red Devils turned five double plays in back of Caleb Keenan in their win over the Shamrocks at Memorial Park.

Marcus Bush, Keenan and Brody Saunders all had two hits for the winners.

Keen went the distance, striking out two, walking three and scattering five singles.

SOFTBALL

Bellaire 9, Beaver Local 6

LISBON -- Emilee Menendez, Ava Ault and Sidney Rowson all drove in two runs each as the visiting Big Reds topped the Beavers.

Menendez slugged a home run and Ault doubled.

Marissa Pacifico singled twice and went the distance inside the circle with three KS and a pair of walks.
