Martins Ferry girls sweep Bellaire Big Reds

BELLAIRE — The Big Reds volleyball squad fell at home Tuesday to the Martins Ferry Purple Riders, swept 25-20, 25-6, 25-12.

Giana Chirpas helped Martins Ferry to the quick win with 16 kills, three aces and three blocks. Lindsey Best piled up seven kills, 12 digs and two aces.

Lexi Carte had six kills while Maddie Lucas had five with nine digs for Ferry. Olivia Harkness led the team in assists with 28, and SJ Koller led the team in digs with 31.

With the OVAC cutoff fast approaching Martins Ferry’s victory keeps them in the No. 4 spot in 3A. Bellaire next faces Beaver Local at home Thursday.

Shadyside def. Buckeye Local 22-25, 25-16, 26-24, 25-19

RAYLAND — The Shadyside Tigers were in it for the long haul Tuesday, taking to the road and beating Buckeye Local in four sets despite dropping the first.

Giovanna Hines led the Tigers in kills with eight. Alie Weatherson was a utility star for Shadyside, leading the team with 17 assist and 16 digs. Aubrey Nippert had 10 digs of her own, and served up three aces. Josey Greenwood had 11 digs.

Ella Mercer and Addasyn Melanko each had four aces of their own. Melanko, Greenwood and Sophie Boltz each had four kills.

Shadyside travels to play Frontier on Thursday.

River def. Magnolia

25-21, 22-25, 25-11, 25-14

HANNIBAL — The Pilots turned the tide during their Tuesday matchup against the Blue Eagles, taking the final two sets by a wide margin in a four-set victory over Magnolia.

Hallie Hammel had 13 kills to pace River, followed by Mallarie Maddy with 11 and Kaylee Hagan and Maci Isaly both with eight.

Hammel also had 14 assists to lead River, followed by Zoey Fox with 13 and Hagan with 12.

Aubrey Fetty piled up 14 digs, followed by Reese Hobbs with 12 and Fox with 10.

Patriots Punch Ticket to States

WELLSBURG — When the W.Va. state golf tournament takes over Oglebay on Oct. 8 and Oct. 9, the Wheeling Park Patriots will be a part of the action.

The Patriots qualified as a team for the state tournament at Monday’s Region I Class AAA tournament at Highland Springs Golf Course, Park coming in second place on the day.

Wheeling Park totaled a team score of 228, four strokes behind the regional champion University Hawks.

John Marshall and Brooke finished eighth and ninth at the Par-72 course.

Wheeling Park’s Andrew Pennybacker shared medalist honors with University’s Daniel Grabo, both carding 73’s.

Also making the cut from Wheeling Park were Will Koegler (77), Will Fuller (78), and Owen Abraham (82).

While University and Wheeling Park’s whole teams qualified, the next two highest individual scores also qualified, both coming from the Morgantown Mohigans– Solas Chhin-Kreiner and Gabe Watson, who both shot 76’s.

For John Marshall, Brayden Kempkens led the way, tallying a 82. Brooke’s Henry Anderson shot an 84 to lead the way for the Bruins.
